Bangalore: Pastor Accused of Sexually Exploiting Minor Girls

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Jun 17: K Shantaraju, the 45-year-old pastor of the Bethel Church and Bethel Student Centre in Siddhartha Nagar, Jalahalli West, has been accused of sexually exploiting minors and misappropriating church funds.

The charges have been levelled by his own wife Priyalatha. The Gangammanagudi police are investigating the case following a complaint from her.

“The children who were brought to the centre for the purpose of education are being used for illegal activities. Minor children are being used for sexual activities in the centre. He has sexual relationships with many girl children. I have witnessed these activities. When questioned, he threatened to kill me and my two children,” Priyalatha said in her complaint.

The couple have been married for nearly 15 years. Priyalatha said she did not file a complaint earlier as she wanted to discuss the issue with superiors, and also wanted to try and mend her husband's ways. She has even provided the police with photos of her husband with minor girls as proof of her allegations.

She alleged that he started having an affair with a minor girl who today is a major. This girl had an abortion at the age of 16, Priyalatha said, adding that there were other such girls too who he had exploited.

She has also accused him of mishandling the donations recieved from abroad by the Bethel Church and Bethel Student Centre that he inherited from his father.

Meanwhile, Shantaraju has rubbished his wife's claims saying that he has been separated from her for 11 years. However, Priyalatha denies the fact.

In a counter-allegation, he accused his wife of plotting against him to gain control over the trust. Donations to the trust have stopped ever since the allegations have started making rounds in the private circles, he said.

Regarding the photos, he said that they date back to 2005, and moreover, the girl in the picture is not a minor but is 21 years old, he said. Priyalatha, on the other hand has said that she developed the photos some years back from a camera roll.

The police have declined to comment on the matter. No arrests have been made so far. Their two daughters have been sent to Hyderabad for safety reasons. The couple are also fighting a divorce case.

Many narrow comments , its sad that more modern we get , we r becoming more conservative. Therz a thin line between sexual exploitation and having affairs . This fellow wants to have fun and looks like second case , and its not illegal. Well it may be immoral but not illegal...leave poor chap to live his life . And media please stop male bashing since it applies to both the genders!

Using religion as a sign board,
so many crooks are doing illegal
things in all religions. If they
    have acted "immorally" also in
    financial stealing and hiding
    they don't deserve any mercy.
If this so called Pastor is found
    guilty, he mut be punished
    according to the criminal laws
of the state of Karnataka to the
maximum. We need not have to give
an excuse to those people who are
    totally dedicated their lives for
religious work " he or she is a
human being" so let us excuse them. They are human
beings and nobody forced them to
take this route, but jumped into
a sacred calling in their own will, so be prepared to take totally extra
caution to lead a godly life
in the society. Else, they are
    answerable in higher altitude.

These are the Demons of Charity. Anyone who has a piece of land and puts up the Lords statue can start a school, charitable trust, old age home, home for the disabled or a mutt with a business motive and eye for donations. I often see agents and brokers getting foreigners to some institutions around set up by out of state people where pain and suffering are shown to extract charity. Even the people staying around are unaware they are charitable trusts. Who is going to regulate these guys and monitor the well being of those staying there. We need a strong Department of social and health services immediately, not another defunct government body.

This has nothing to do with religion...moral values have vanished these days.

When people you trust are exposed it hurts the sentiment of the community..rubbing it on each other just makes it worse...I woul like daiji to take out people who blame one another and communities, religion out from the comment field...by allowing such posts you are promoting religious hatred amongst otherwise peaceful majority.

Friend Nagesh Nayak, There are many priests, bishops, cardinals and pastors are dongi. NO doubt about it, But for their evil acts pointing out on Christaianity is wrong. Indian people msut look at the work in dedication what they do. Claiming false accusations of conversions and attacking, provoking agretion against is not right.

Do you know how many millions of Hindus learnt in Christain schools and built their feture and work in US, UK, Austrelia and Europe?

Indaia is Democratic and democratic values must be respected. I do not know he is a pastor or not, if he may be a pastor or not and done these acts he must me brought to justice.

@Lloyd Dsouza, Dubai/Surathkal no one will be happy if minorities are caught for doing bad things because good and bad people are there in all the communities and religion. In the same way there are many people in this forum who always blame hindu organizations when there is a news about majority community people involved in bad things that too without knowing the truth.

Shocking news. Investigate it and punish the pastor if the allegations are true. Nithyanada was caught red handed in the video itself...Even $1 billion technology cannot duplicate him in that video....So he was truly guilty....He is anyways back to business...but with this pastor, if guilty punish him....till then let us wait for the investigations.

Religious fanaticism and prejudices make us so blind that they do not allow us to look at things as they are with an open mind. This is evident from some of the biased and ridiculous comments made in this forum with politics in mind. A few bad people are bound to be there in every field as there are good people, irrespective of religious affiliations.

    @Imran Kaup.Dubai
The spirit of punishment you advocated may be applied in India by the government only on peaceful gathering like they did on Baba Ramdev's followers in Delhi consisting women, aged persons, children, hat too in midnight!!!

Priyalatha, wife of Pastor, Shantharaju has given an interview to TV today and it looks and circumstantial evidence corroborates her claim. Any way an in depth investigation from police and trust officials to needed to come to the conclusion. Both were @ odds for some time and therefore need to investigate impartially. If Pastor found guilty, he should be put behind the bar with out any mercy.

Pastor, who is preaching to the congregation is not practising the core value of Christianity ie Love and has not put into practise this in his own family.
What type of role model is this pastor?
At the same time I am not defending his wife's complain nor saying the pastor is not guilty. But there is also smoke in this complain. " A person who is faithful in small things will be faithful in bigger things". Let the law agencies keek their eyes open about the exploitation if this is true.

A lot of such crimes are not brought to the forefront due to power and money or due to political pressure on cops and children have to suffer in silence and get scarred for life. Even the Belthangady case where a pastor was killed was swept under the carpet due to pressure. Surely, we do not believe in justice being served and bringing guilty to book.
