Mangaluru, Mar 8: The Indian railway network is marching towards green revolution. In order to reduce the dependence on import of fuel, electrification of tracks is done at brisk pace. By the end of 2023, the railways has target of 100% electrification of all train routes.

So far, 85% of the railway tracks are electrified. If the complete network is electrified, then the network would be the largest in the world that is running under electricity.

At present, excepting north east states, all other states have made good progress in electrification of railway tracks. The train track in India is 65,414 route kilometre including Konkan railway. Out of this 53,250 route kilometre of track is electrified. Some states have already achieved 100% electrification while others including Karnataka lag behind in implementation of the same.

Till the end of January 2023, 100% electrification of train routes are done in the states of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Pondicherry, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh. More than 90% electrification is done in states of Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Kerala.

In Karnataka, only 65% train routes are electrified. Out of the 3,818 train route in the state, only 2,250 kilometre of route is electrified so far. If all the train routes are electrified, then railways will completely be free of fuel import. This will save a whopping Rs 1.45 lac crore.

The union government aims to use green Hydrogen at least to the extent of 30% by 2030. Already, passenger car experiment in this regard has turned out to be a success. The experiment is carried out in railways also.
