Puttur, Mar 11: Sun is scorching in the second week of March in Puttur. The mercury has shot up to 40 deg Celsius in the city.
The temperature is on the rise in the district of Dakshina Kannada this summer and Puttur is also facing the brunt of the same. In the past week, sun coupled with cloudy weather is on in the taluk with temperatures hovering between 37 to 40 deg Celsius. Agriculturists and public are under panic as hottest months of April and May are yet to arrive.
There are instances of showers due to extreme weather. People of the taluk are also expecting the same. Rains might bring some respite to the merciless sunny weather that is prevailing at present. However, the climate cannot be assessed completely, says Naveen Puttur.
Ground water level has reduced considerably in ponds, wells and river. Agriculturists who rely on these water sources are facing shortage of water. Some arecanut farms have begun to dry up. Water storage in vented dam is already too low. Agriculture is hit hard due to scorching sun according to farmer Mahesh.
