Puttur: Soring mercury, depleting ground water level – Agriculturists panic

Puttur, Mar 11: Sun is scorching in the second week of March in Puttur. The mercury has shot up to 40 deg Celsius in the city.

The temperature is on the rise in the district of Dakshina Kannada this summer and Puttur is also facing the brunt of the same. In the past week, sun coupled with cloudy weather is on in the taluk with temperatures hovering between 37 to 40 deg Celsius. Agriculturists and public are under panic as hottest months of April and May are yet to arrive.

There are instances of showers due to extreme weather. People of the taluk are also expecting the same. Rains might bring some respite to the merciless sunny weather that is prevailing at present. However, the climate cannot be assessed completely, says Naveen Puttur.

Ground water level has reduced considerably in ponds, wells and river. Agriculturists who rely on these water sources are facing shortage of water. Some arecanut farms have begun to dry up. Water storage in vented dam is already too low. Agriculture is hit hard due to scorching sun according to farmer Mahesh.

    The rampant destruction of green cover and unregulated drilling of bores will lead to catastrophic consequences, the rut which has already started and will worsen over the years leading to acute shortage of even drinking water! Greedy farmers, in order to make quick profits went on converting paddy fields and any other cultivable land into areca plantations; not understanding that areca is a water guzzling plant! The ground water table has gone down considerably; water which was found at 400-500 feet has gone down to 1400-1600 feet; this process of going deeper and deeper cannot go on for long as underground water is a limited commodity unless it's replinished naturally! Moreover at this level, the water is contaminated by heavy elements like arsenic and antimony, which if consumed are very detrimental to health! All in all, we are on the way to make this place like a desert; there are numerous such examples in Maharashtra! With the severe climatic change, the future is anybody's guess!! These areca planters will have to pay a heavy price for their misdeeds of playing games with nature!!

    Taking note of this year's forest fires and clonsidering the number of trees chopped off for roas widening, the ground water levels will be even worse in coming years. People have given up the use of open well that serves as reservoirs, and are opting for bore Wells. Thus going down upto 200 feet seeking ater. If there is no feeding to the ground, from where the water will come ??? Reform people, it's still not too late.

    None of the Tuluva Daivas ,Politicians, Religious leaders and the intellectuals spoke against the Nethravathi River diversion project (Which is now renamed as Yettinahole project to hood wink the public). Any imbalance to natural flow of water will be devastating to the various life species thriving in these forests . It also drastically changes the ground water level. Climate change and corruption are 2 serious issues which is impacting human lives along with all other forms of life.

    It is advisable not to go out directly to the sunlight between 11 to 3 in the evening.Drink water at regular intervals.Even the nature playing hide and seek by remaining chill in the early morning and when day progress getting hotter .

    We must all be prepared for living with little means.... One stage will come when we will have lots of money in hands but nothing available to buy.... Nature has its own checks and balances... We must find innovative ways to survive in extreme conditions when we still are resourceful... Unfortunately we have selfish, corrupt leaders across parties with short term personal goals.... Even in modern days we are still going behind old outdated rituals but are far short of visionary ideas... With even 3 cents plots going for bore wells (despite law of spacing due to corruption) we are heading towards an imminent catastrophe... We may be forced to open sea water desalination plants in not very far future....

    Better all to pray for offseasonal rains instead of highlighting raising mercury and getting panicked for water scarcity
