Kundapur, Mar 13: The renovation work of Ashoka Park, situated behind Basrur gram panchayat, is underway with the help of locals.
During the work of levelling the ground of the park, led by panchayat member Mahesh Mendon, a Linga Mudra stone was found. The matter was brought to the notice of Pradeep Kumar Basruru, district convener of Indian history edition committee of Karnataka.
The stone has the inscriptions of sun, moon, Shivalinga and Nandi. It is estimated that the stone inscription is about 400 years old. The message seems to wish that the empire of the ruling king live till sun and moon are intact.
Prof T Murugesh, history researcher, says, “It was common for Shivites to venerate Lord Shiva, Vaishnavites to Lord Vishnu and Jains of the Thirthankaras. Shivites used to install Linga Mudra stones on their land borders while Vaishnavas used to put Vamanamudra stones and Jains used Mukkode stones. It was their way of identifying the borders of their land. Accordingly, the Linga Mudra stones found at Basrur were put to identify the borders. The cooperation and service of public is required to preserve the stone inscription, war memorials, and border stones of history. The record should be mentioned in the history of our land.”
Earlier Vamanamudra stone was found at Shantavara Veeranjaneya and Lingamudra stone was found near the house of Ramananda Shettigar which is at a stone’s throw away from Veeranjaneya.
Nitesh Shetty, secretary of Basrur park committee and Madhusudhan Bhat cooperated in finding the Linga Mudra stone.
