Mangaluru: Fire breaks out for third time in Pacchanady dump yard

Mangaluru, Mar 13: Fire broke out once again at the Pacchanady dump yard on Monday, March 13.

This is the third time in this year the Pacchanady dump yard has caught fire. Fire tenders from NMPA and MRPL rushed to the spot to douse the fire.

Thick smoke engulfed Vamanjoor and Pacchanady areas after the dump yard caught fire.

The locals had a tough time in dealing with the fresh fire that broke out on Monday even as they have been facing health hazards since the last three months due to regular occurrences of fire.

The district administration and MCC have constantly failed to take adequate measures to avoid fire incidents at the Pacchanady dump yard, while locals are demanding a permanent solution to the fire incidents that are continuing to dog them. Locals are also demanding the need to shift them from the area keeping the health concerns in mind.

Pacchanady has three schools and colleges in the vicinity and the health of students remains a major concern. Locals are demanding swift action from the district administration, MCC and elected representatives to ensure their safety and also come up with a permanent solution for the fire incidents.

Motorists also found difficulty to drive in the area as Vamanjoor and Pacchanady was covered with thick smoke.

    This is done intentionally... Every night we have to deal with the smoke... It feels suffocating... Being a resident close to this area i feel pathetic ... I don't understand where is humanity gone and why the MCC is not taking any measures to sort this issue. People are suffering . These politicians sleep in their A/C rooms and are not bothered about how we people have to deal with the smoke throughout the night. Children are up late night studying for their exams and they feel sick . If they cannot sort out this issue this city should not be called SMART CITY. No use ... They are only good at collecting taxes... Waste tax is collected on a timely basis ... But they do want to take up the right measures on timely basis.... Such educated fools they are...

    Old, sick people, and students are fleeing from Kochi due to a similar type of landfill blazing since the last 11 days! The fumes from this smoke contain diaoxin, which is very harmful to health!

    I think there may a chance to shieft Dumping yard to some other place, because this place can be very worthy in future, because Golf and Pilikula Dhama is near by, it is tourist ccenter.Now tourist resist to visit because of bad filthy smell. MCC may shieft this to outskirts of Mangalore and can sell plots to construct independent Villas at veryhigh rates, that can buy onlyrich peoples. . That what I guess.

    Landfill management/ waste management- is it not a component of smart city .This should have been a priority .unfortunately all concerned spent on items like smart poles , intelligent traffic management and circles/ drains which have no end and start. Not to forget the Cement tiles which are laid on footpaths ( chequered) which are in shambles as they do not meet any standards. As a smart city what we needed was an integrated waste management system with an engineered landfill and not a dumping yard. Offices of authority and planners of the city are not questionable by tax paying citizens . But citizens of the city can be taken to task for not abiding by the rules for waste management, pollution ( noise) etc. smoke billowing from the landfill is a health hazard and can be charged as a criminal offence . But who will bell the cat. The ward committee is only on paper nothing will change. Professionals and experts are not a part of decision making . Let us pray that the almighty gives us the strength and some common sense to our authorities. Till such a thing happens god save us

    Today early morning the Pachanady smoke spread I Bejai area also. Breathing was difficult. Total failed to maintain Mangalore from our MCC. DC must suspend all related staff including CORPORATOR and MAYOR.

    Someone is purposely initiating these fires! I can imagine the hardships of the people staying in the vicinity especially the old and those put up in old age homes and college hostels; it's a very big health hazard as the poisonous stench can spread far and wide as per the wind speeds; deplorable for a smart City!!
