Mangalore Connection for 'Ashram Money' Suspected

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jun 22: Trustee of Satya Sai Baba Ashram in Puttaparti, V Sriniasan, and security officer, Pradhan, were arrested by a special team of policemen belonging to Anantapur and Hindupur police stations on Tuesday June 21 afternoon. These arrests were made relating to transportation of huge sums of money from Sri Satya Sai Baba Ashram in Puttaparti.

They were arrested on the basis of information provided by Harish Anand Shetty, Chandrashekhar, driver of the trustee, V Srinivasan, and K Sohan Shetty, who were arrested while transporting huge sums of cash through a Volvo bus and a Qualis vehicle, during their questioning.

The fact that those arrested while transporting the Ashram money are Mangalore-based, has given rise to speculation that the money in question was actually meant to be shifted to coastal districts of Karnataka. Harish Shetty, caught carrying Rs 36 lac in a Qualis car in Anantapur district, and Sohan Shetty, who was travelling in a Volvo bus, and found to be in possession of Rs 10 crore cash, are brothers. Harish Shetty is employed with a construction firm in Bangalore. Sohan and Chandrashekhar were arrested on the basis of information provided by Harish during his questioning.  They are sons of retired senior police officer from the district, Umanath Shetty. The other man, Chandrashekhar, happens to be the driver of trustee, V Srinivasan. Interestingly, it has come to be known that the Volvo bus, in which two gunny bags containing currency notes amounting to Rs 10 crore were found, was bound for Mangalore, and not Bangalore as reported earlier. These facts have made people speculate that the money is linked to Satyajit, who has Mangalore links, and who was the closest confidante of Sai Baba during Baba’s last days.

Reportedly, the policemen have obtained oral permission to arrest some of the trustees of the Ashram, and to take into custody some more for questioning, if the need for the same arises.  In all likelihood, J Ratnakar, a relative of the Baba, whose involvement with this incident is alleged, will also be among those who will be summoned for questioning.

It is learnt that the policemen are under immense pressure from influential quarters to hush up the matter. It is almost certain that big fish are involved in these transactions. One among the persons who called up the policemen is said to be a union minister.

In the meanwhile, apprehending trouble, J Ratnakar has contacted prominent devotees of the Ashram, and sought their help to oppose any action against him. It is said that he has asked them to launch a fight against the government, accusing it of trying to take over the Ashram by blaming its trustees of illegally transporting money. He wants the devotees to pressurize the government to leave all the matters concerning the Ashram to the Trust and its devotees, and not to interfere in the Ashram administration. The devotees were also impressed upon to ask the government not to give rise to complications and misunderstandings at a time when the memorial of Satya Sai Baba is being built.

However, it is gathered that a huge majority of the devotees approached by Ratnakar have refused to take up cudgels on his behalf.

In the meanwhile, the three arrested men were remanded to judicial custody till June 27.

Well said Harold D'cunha, when sai baba left the physical body, people were praising him ,now same people start abusing him.everything given to him is by devotees will and their spiritual experience with him made it so.Of course money is required as in india the rich are too rich and poor are too poor, but baba has provided all the facilities for his millions of people and devotees. He has never roamed the world and did merry using that. This shows how the minds of people gets corrupted by the media.Any person till now has never born in this age who has done such a vast relentless service.

I donot understand why such a cry about Sai Sabha's asset.
Let's look at a broader way:
    1) Did he looted anybody or entity.
    2. Is people used to come to his ashram or he has gone to people for money.
He has received donations on freewill of people.
Looking at the brigher side, he had looked after water, sanitation facilitiy for many villagers, free hospital care, schools and colleges.
Has this baba was without any fortune, do u think, the press or public or the politicians or govt. agencies ever bothered this ashram.
Money leads to evil, some want to grab it, This is because our human mind is corrupt which fact one has to accept. When to some service will become business, these people will spoil the entire congregation image which is sad.

I dont agree with you Madhava Krupu D., Mangalore. Please think and comment.
I agree with you Jyothika Shetty, M'lore/Dubai. Good and bad people are there in all the communities and religions. If someone from a particular community gets involved in some wrong things doesnt mean that entire community is bad.

Impressions, both positive and negative, are created in society because of certain repeated occurences. But simply generalising has no basis. You need not worry much about such comments.

What has this article got to do with Shetty's. Two guys whose family names end with Shetty makes the whole community "HOOKS AND CROOKS" for Madhava Krupu. There are several stories which get published where people from all walks and religions are involved. Does that mean that the community they hail from are corrupt? Madhava Krupu has got his facts wrong...Bunt community is not very small community like your mind.

Your saying that Majority come up by Hook or Crook. Your surely not aware of the facts so to say as there is a huge business community outside and inside India who are educated and have not come up YOUR WAY. There are thousands of middle class Bunt family's leading modest lives yet give prime importance to moral integrity. Therefore, please refrain from commenting against any community with little known facts as yours. Like the saying goes "If you want to find faults look for a mirror instead of a binocular".

98 kilograms of gold, 307 kg of silver and Rs 11.56 crore in cash, the total value of all these put together tentatively comes to Rs. 38 crores. In addition, we have been hearing the Rs. 35 lakhs have been sized by the police from one of the ashram mates. Another incident has also come to notice is that two sack ful of currencies have also been sized by the police. The initial estimates of the money sized comes to Rs. 5 to 10 crores. Let there be no doubt in anybody’s mind that certainly all this is un accounted money which the Baba was holding on behalf of politicians, bureaucrats like IAS and IPs officers who use to visit the Baba to park their ill gotten and unaccounted money.

It is reported that the Yajur Mandir was constructed by L&T in 2006 for a sum of Rs. 35 crores with all modern and recent security gazets in place. It is reported in TVs that bio metric systems were installed there to prevent any unauthorized entry into the personal chambers. Whether it was a spriitiual place or a strong room of a swiss bank is not that difficult to answer.

Civil society members have been demanding that Govt. of India should carry out a profile of the bureaucrats like IAS and IPS should be made who visited tax heavens. Similarly, it is urged that all bureaucrats including civil servants, who were posted there as collectors, and SPs should be thorourly investigated for their role in money laundering. This is very important because without Baba’s support and approval, no bureaucrat was posted there. All newt working like promotion, Transfer, solving of Corruption cases, etc. were decided and fixed there. That was the specific purpose of bureaucrats visiting that place so often.

Our demand to government is all those bureaucrats IAS officers has visited the place for more than 5 times must be investigated for misuse of official powers especially those bureaucrats who went for his funeral and other ceremonies because of involvement of large part of their money was involved in it.

The citizens of this country has every right to know whether the same rules are applied to Babas also for possessing huge cache of unaccounted monies at their possession. Or income tax department has given some special exemptions to such people to keep any amount they want. Had a poor ordinary citizen been found of some few thousand rupees of cash, he would have been hounded b y CBI, income tax and other government agencies, but in the case of Baba, nobody is talking anybody is talking anybothing because the money belong to bureaucrats like IAS and IPS.

Now the time has come the people of this country to know and see the real face of these Babas. Even the claim of the baba that he will die after ten years was proved wrong wwhen he died recently. Even then, his followers are trying to justiy his death by reengineering the facts and figures. But our bureaucrats are not worried about the date of death because they are only worried about
