Dear Anna, Please Come to Karnataka...

Bharati K (First Year BA, Political Science)

(Fed up with Karnataka politics and corruption, a young student writes an open letter to Anna Hazare)

Jun 29, 2011
Mangalore

Mr. Anna Hazare
Village and post: Ralegan Siddhi
Taluka Parner,
District Ahmednagar
Maharashtra

Dear Anna,

I appreciate your initiative to speak against corruption in Karnataka, at this age you have shown the nation that age is not a factor in fighting for a cause, and neither can age silence you if only you have the determination to fight. I can understand what may have been going through your mind when the entire nation was mutely watching politicians being alleged of corruption worth thousands of crores of rupees.

You have not only won in your first step, you have won the hearts of millions of Indians who hate the 'corruption' tag on the people they have chosen to be their representatives.

I stay in Mangalore, and currently I am pursuing my political science in a private college here. I want to become a good poltician some day, but looking at the current scenario, I am not sure of achieving my goal. The politicians around us, instead of becoming role models to us, are discouraging us with the bad image they have created of politics.

I feel helpless watching my beloved state of Karnataka being tainted and given a bad name for various reasons over the past few years. Every day we see new allegations and counter-allegations of corruption hurled by politicians at each other. If these politicians keep doing such drama every day, how will the state develop?

First the opposition releases 'proof' of corruption against the ruling party, and next day the latter follows suit by 'chargesheeting' the opposition. In this tug of war, it is we, the innocent citizens who are suffering. The saddest part is, our politicians have no qualms about even using the name of God for their selfish motives.

Dear Anna, we have tremendous faith in you. You can create change. We the young Kannadigas pledge our wholehearted support to you. We will come to you and sit for the fast. Please come just once, let the entire nation know what is happening in Karnataka...and please Anna...save us from all these corrupt and dirty politicians, who never bother about the development of the state, and only look for personal benefits.

I know you had come to our state just last month, but that was not enough as it was just for two days and the call against corruption did not sustain after you left. The evil of corruption runs deep into Karnataka politics, and much perseverance and efforts are needed to root it out. Only you can guide us in this mission, dear Anna.

I do not know if this letter would reach you, but I feel relieved of a burden in making this appeal to you.

And I am hopeful that you will come one day...we are waiting for that great day to come.

Yours truly,

Bharati K, Mangalore

I AM A NON PARTY STUDENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE:

WHAT WE SEE TODAY IS A POLITICS OF CORRUPTION, POLITICS OF RELIGION, POLITICS OF FUNDAMENTALISM, POLITICS OF DOUBLE STANDAARDS, POLITICS OF HYPOCRICY.

MOST POLITICIANS ARE ILLITERATE, THEY BECOME REPRESENTATIVES EITHER THROUGH MONEY OR MUSCLE POWER !

MAY BE A COMMUNIST OR NAXAL TYPE REVOLUTION IS THE NEED OF THE HOUR TO CLEAN THE SYSTEM !

I totally agree with the Mr Hazare's fight against corruption and a strong lokapal bill. He started very strong but on the way the whole issue got diluted because of the kind of the people joined his group. I have one question which I find difficult to find an answer, what if we have a strong lokpal with powers to prosecute PM, president etc, who will take care of Lokpal if he is corrupt? I personnally feel, lokpal with extra juridictional power is like a dictatator or some sort communist country chairman

Jasmine Bai, Although all in Karnatka shout "be kannadigas", we Indians always bow in front of English men and their English tongue, so its not a miracle if you have not paid a single rupee to anyone to get your work done ! I, however, could not get a single small Govt. office work done without bribing.

Dear Sathish Kunder. Lokayukta is present in Karnataka But he Doent have any power that is what shri Santhosh Hegde is asking .A Lokayukta cannot act as a Prosecutor and Judge together .Lokayukta Doent have any Suo muto Powers .All these are coovered under Lokpal Bill .If Lokpal Bill is Passed automatically Lokayukta Santhosh Hegde will have Full POWERS .If any of the Ministers have done real Corruption in Karnataka then Lokayukta can take action.Even Yedyurappa if corrupt cannot be spared .I Think Yedyrappa s is Perception and not real Corruption .So also Ashok Chavan of Maharastra .Hence Political Parties whether BJP or Congress dont want Lokpal it seems .Lets us see who will bell the Cat

DR. S. KAMATH MUMBAI, ANNA IS NOT GOD SENT PERSON AS YOU SAY BUT BJP, RSS AND SAFFRON FORCES SENT PERSON. ANNA CANNOT CHANGE THE LAW. HE MAY BE A MEMBER OF CIVIL SOCIETY, THAT DOES NOT MEAN HE IS THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA OR PRESIDENT. THERE IS AN ELECTED GOVERNMENT. IF ANNA IS SO CONCERNED ABOUT CORRUPTION, WHY HE IS NOT GOING TO BJP RULED STATES? FOR EXAMPLE KARNATAKA CM HIMSELF IS DOING SO MUCH CORRUPTION BUT ANNA EVEN BY MISTAKE IS NOT TELLING ABOUT IT. HE IS ONLY BEHIND SONIA AND PM. I THINK DR. KAMATH IF YOU ARE SO CONCERNED ABOUT ANNA AND HAVE SO MUCH LOVE FOR HIM, TAKE ANNA TO YOUR HOUSE AND KEEP HIM. ANNA IS CRAETING LAW AND ORDER PROBLEM WITH HIS HATE SPEACHES AGAINST THE UPA GOVERNMET. THIS IS NOT CORRECT.

Dear Dr S kamath , Mumbai

I fully agree with you that Mr. Anna Hazare has done a lot of contribution to Rural Development and completely transformed Ralegaon Siddi into a model village by right utilization of natural resources by having solar power and rain water harvesting. He is a role model and inspiration to many of us to do something of that sort in a remote village in Mangalore.

But as regards his fight on corruption I have a different take. This fight is rather more concentrated only on Lokpal Bill which I doubt if it can bring about any desired results. E.g. in Karnataka we have very strong Lokayukta but could it stop the rampant corruption here? Moreover coterie around him is misleading him and the spirit with which was started has already lost its way.

Problem with Mr. Anna Hazare is he got carried away by the support he got and this changed him to a arrogant man. Instead he should have kept his calm and quietly discussed the things for more meaningful lokpal with the government.

If you think that Mr. Anna Hazare can eradicate Corruption with the Lokpal Bill then I have nothing to say.

Similarly Anna Hazare started the Movement of Rural Development when 30 yrs Back when his age was Just 42 Yrs He is doing this Lokpal Movement at the age of 72 .I am Sure he will succeed at the age of 73 is Making India Corruption Free

Though i am small in age, but what i understand about politics is that we dont have any rights to talk about politcians, as we elected them as our representative, so its first came to us that we elected the right persons as our representatives. It is easy to sit in home and writing somthing about anybody but it is difficult to visit our rural society and understand thier problems and help them to solve thier problems. In todays date Anna is only the person who not only understand the village problems but make solutions on that problems, so what u waiting for dear INDIANS lets take Annas job and make our nation currption free......!

I feel so sad after reading many of the comments here. Many have not understood the point the author is making, instead they are commenting on party lines and religious lines which very unfortunate.

The great Gandhian Annaji is trying to give up everything to save the country by putting in place a system through which politicians will be made accountable and their deeds will be transparent. He wants to start cleaning of our political system from top because big fishes are at top. Please extend support to his cause. Mind you, we will not get one more opportunity like this. Many comments reflect the ignorance about the corruption. Please read the Nira Radia Tapes. Then start commenting.

If a strong Jan Lokpal Bill is in effect, then, the strong Lokayukta system will emerge at all state levels which will expose the corrupt. I am ready to come to the streets in support of Annaji for whatever he does, even for 2 months, come what may, because I know for sure that he is the upright person.

Dear Bharati, I am a christian. Believe me, I won't support anybody on religious lines. As regards your write up, I am with you. Good Luck.

The reactions on this page are either naive or politically motivated. Since the 70's, Karnataka has been trailing only perhaps Bihar. Jaffer Sharief, Rahaman Khan, Gowda inc have brazenly amassed wealth & property beyond imagination. Krishna & co have done it subtly & suavely. So I am surprised by this sudden awakening. Of course, there still is corruption, but the larger one-point agenda of the Centre is to remove the BJP government.

why can't one of us become like Anna Hazare, why we need to call person from other state,Did Anna Hazare elected our politicains, we are the people who ed these ministers . I have full respect for Anna,he has done excellent job at this age. but when it comes to state we citizens of the state should get up from your sleep and should walk on the road for this corruption cause,i am ashmed by watching on tv about our karnataka, our great politicians are busy in taking/asking oath each others, sometime i doubt are we still in 18th century. i am too small in age and don't have political experience to take the leadership but i fully support if any person like Anna within us will take this corruption and unite all karnataka citizens and show our solidarity to these cheap politicians, instead of doing progress in the state they are busy by giving and taking oath. its shame for us people where some time people here asking silly questions like, hey what's happening in kanrantaka, your leaders are busy to full fill their oaths. really its shame for us. lets walk on the street without harming anyone and show our solidarity. we should do this and we can .lets starts please .unless and untill we don't show our interest this politicians will play hide and seek game.
There in no development, recently i travelled our neighbour state in India, i am so shocked by looking the infrastructure there, their service roads are better than our national highways!!

Corruption in India is a cultural aspect.

Indians seem to think nothing peculiar about corruption.
    It is everywhere.

Indians tolerate corrupt individuals rather than correct them.

No race can be congenitally corrupt.
But can a race be corrupted by its culture?

To know why Indians are corrupt ,
look at their patterns and practices .

    First:

    Religion is transactional in India.
Indians give God cash and anticipate an out-of-turn reward.
Such a plea acknowledges that favours are needed for the undeserving.

In the world outside the temple walls,
such a transaction is named- “bribe”.

A wealthy Indian gives not cash to temples,
but gold crowns and such baubles.

His gifts can not feed the poor. His pay-off is for God.
He thinks it will be wasted if it goes to a needy man.

In June 2009, The Hindu published a report of Karnataka minister
    G. Janardhan Reddy gifting a crown of gold and diamonds worth
    Rs 45 crore to Tirupati.

India’s temples collect so much that
they don't know what to do with it.
Billions are gathering dust in temple vaults.

When Europeans came to India they built schools.
When Indians go to Europe & USA, they build temples.

Indians believe that if God accepts money for his favours,
then nothing is wrong in doing the same thing.
This is why Indians are so easily corruptible.

Indian culture accommodates such transactions morally.
There is no real stigma. An utterly corrupt JayaLalita can
make a comeback, just unthinkable in the West.

    Second:

Indian moral ambiguity towards corruption is visible in its history.
Indian history tells of the capture of cities and kingdoms after guards
were paid off to open the gates, and commanders paid off to surrender.

    This is unique to India.

Indians' corrupt nature has meant limited warfare on the subcontinent.
It is striking how little Indians have actually fought compared to
    ancient Greece and modern Europe.

The Turks’ battles with Nadir Shah were vicious and fought to the finish.

In India fighting wasn't needed, bribing was enough to see off armies.

Any invader willing to spend cash could brush aside India’s kings,
no matter how many tens of thousands soldiers were in their infantry.

Little resistance was given by the Indians at the “Battle” of Plassey.
Clive paid off Mir Jaffar and all of Bengal folded to an army of 3,000.

There was always a financial exchange to taking Indian forts.
Golconda was captured in 1687 after the secret back door was left open.

Mughals vanquished Marathas and Rajputs with nothing but bribes.

The Raja of Srinagar gave up Dara Shikoh’s son Sulaiman to
    Aurangzeb after receiving a bribe.

There are many cases where Indians participated
on a large scale in treason due to bribery.

    Question is: Why Indians

But Bharathi K, you trust Anna and i trust you. I know you have some beautiful thoughts for this wonderland. But don't get disappointed. There will be a light at the end of every tunnel. See the wind of change in the Middle East. Dictators are thrown out of the country which they ruled for decades. I hope we don't end up the same way. Every politician wants to abuse the word democracy. But don't you worry i hope your dreams will come true and wish you all the best.

World over it's a fact that people over 75 nearing 80 go senile. Blame it on old age, fatigue, overworked cells,et al but this is true. It's only in our country that the likes of these become CM's, PM's, Presidents or for that matter crusaders. Something fundamentally wrong here as seen in this letter. This letter should have been from Anna to Bharathi right! Then only will be our 'Bharat will be Mahaan'. Treat the old with the respect they deserve but looking upon them to lead when they 'falter' seemingly on account of old age then it becomes a bit too much.

I fully agree with Mr. Janardhan. Fight against corruption rests with each individual. When it is us, it seems ok, but we are the first ones to point fingers at others. Many of the celebrities seen on stage with Anna are themselves tax evaders who do not pay their income tax. We want to pay less taxes on our land, property, income etc. For this we are willing to pay a bribe to the assessment officer. At an individual level we are both happy in paying bribe and receiving bribe. What is the difference between us and our politicians. We too will do the same thing once we reach there. As an opposition leader Yeddy was fantastic but as CM he is the worst that we have had. They say power corrupts and Yeddy is a prime example. Anna cannot fight our battles, we have to do it oruselves first by paying our taxes, resisting from paying bribe or receiving bribe. Forget the mad ranting of people like Nagesh. He seems to live in a land of hallucinations. Does not seem to see reality.

I have great respect for Mr. Anna Hazare for his Gandhian way of life but his fight against corruption is somehow lacking direction. He is only aiming for Lokpal as if that is the end of corruption. His attention is only on Central Government and State of Maharashtra and he has not shown much enthusiasm at any other corrupt states like Karnataka.

Some people say that when Mr. Anna Hazare started this agitation he had one particular Maharashtra politician in mind and wanted to settle scores against this politician by invoking Lokpal against him. By that time, there were large number of people fed up with the corruption in the country joined the movement and this agitation took different turn. Mr. Anna Hazare was not in a position to take on such a leadership as he had a smaller agenda. He got carried away by the support and started to behave in an authoritarian manner daring the government and his cheap comments against government exposed his leadership qualities. By his behaviour, Anna Hazare slowly lost his hold of the movement and the hype created has got fizzled out. A good chance for the meaningful lokpal got lost in the ego war.

Lokpal can not end corruption. It comes into affect only after corruption is committed and the people get punished only if all the evidence is available. Somebody has commented that Karnataka is the First state to introduce Laokayaukta and we have able Lokayukta Shri Santhosh Hegde heading it. Did it make any difference to the corruption in the state? Karnataka is number one in corruption.

Only way to stop corruption is we ourselves have to change our mindset. Everything should start at the lowest level from Taluk office. We people should make anticorruption squads at every level and oppose bribing. RTI has given us strength to question government at every level and let us use this to bring transparency in the system.

Why cant they learn to be positive and spread positive details and improve the minds of readers, who love to read good topic that come on Daijiworld. As for me I am sick of trying to put some logic in his upper vessel. Kevin - Mumbai.

So please dont compare annaji with Gandhiji. Annaji is doing a good work with his own principles but not a GHANDIAN.

See, even if I had no black money, I paid cash unaccounted to buy a flat..I paid bribe to get in Registration papers...I am sure 99% of people do the same..and until and unless we the people stop this practise..Lokpal can not achcheive much... anyway, I appreciate your initiative Bharati.

Congratulations Bharathi. Everyone knew and wanted this. You gave an opportunity to some like minded to explode. Karnataka has not seen such a worst scenario ever. Thanks to BJP in particular and Congress, JDS in general. All these three fight not for the kannadigas but to snatch the ruling machine from the other.Look at the comment by Lydia Lobo, i totally agree with her. Somebody commented to go to lokayukta but this body itself is lacking in power. First of all who chose the so called representative to form a government? Were we honest and justify our ion through merit? Or did we go according to the banners? But i dont agree that we should stop bribing from the lower end. All in all will have to suffer. If it is one ore two points we can but here in all offficeses from left to right and top to bottom the machine is run by a stuff "BRIBERY". To whom you go to complaint or how the day to day works get done! We have to repair from the Top End as Anna thinks. And WE by the ion and election with honesty forgetting Hinduism, Muslimism and Chrishianity. is

Nice letter to Anna. But let's look deeper into the problem of corruption. It has been created and encouraged by each one of us. We don’t need Anna to come and sit with us fasting to end corruption. Each one of us has to become Anna Hazare in our deeds and outlook. I don’t know to speak Konkani, Kannada or Tulu but I have settled some time back in Managalore and got all my services and utilities from the Government Offices incl. Driving License by producing my Qatar Driving ID without giving a single penny as bribe. I have visited RTO, MESCON, Tehsildar, Court, Corporation Office, etc. and got my work done myself quick and without any bribe. All that I would say softly in English, when discreetly approached for bribe was “sorry I am anti-corrupt and don’t give bribes” and my job was done. Even though I am back in the Gulf now, I still speak proudly of my native Mangalore because no one in the Government was corrupt to me and no one delayed or harassed me in anyway. It is a long struggle, but each of us got to put on this hat, stand in queues for our turn, pay the government set fees incl. tax if you have too and surely we will be a “Corruption Free State and Nation”. Slowly but surely.

Team Anna is the only effective leadership available against corruption in India at present. He is a Indo-Pak war veteran and has started this initiative because he could not see our beloved nation in ruin. He is not against any particular political party, religion or creed. So, let us not suspect his motive although the politicians, as usual, are trying their level best to bring in religion to malign him.

As regards this letter is concerned, it speaks every Kannadiga's heart out. Some readers have suggested that Anna's presence is not necessary and we should come to the roads. I share that view partially. However, Anna is a magic figure as he has a mass appeal and people will come to the roads if he comes. So, let us support him and not deviate his attention till the Jan Lokpal bill as designed by Team Anna is passed in the Partliament although I am not hopeful considering the Congress Party's misdeeds. Remember, all political parties are united to derail Lokpal!! Having said this, somewhere deeper in my heart I feel that Anna might get killed as the J.Dey because the politicians just can't afford to get exposed!!!!

No doubt Karnataka is the First state to introduce Lokayaukta in the state and we have able Lokayukta (Ombudsman), Shri Santhosh Hegde. But what is the outcome? On the illegal mining and the so called ban on exporting iron ore Mr. Santosh Hegde openly said “Yeddyurappa is fooling 6 crore people of Karnataka”. So, what happened ? Starting Lokayukta District Level Police Stations for what? For taking higher bribe to ‘safeguard’ the complainant? We can see what is happening to the RTI activists. Politics in Karnataka has reached it's nadir. I appreciate the points highlighted by young writer Bharati.

    Ms.Bharathi,
I appriciate your concern for corruption in poloitics and politicians. Some how I am not convinced about purpose of writting a open letter to Anna Hazare.First of all we must confess that Anna is not a politician and he never takes sides of any politician or any political party. It does not mean that I is not inclined to any political party as such he exercises his vote and it is purely his personal matter.
Secondly he is being one among me and you can not direct any body to behave in his wishful way but can only exercise his right to express views as we do.In public life many of us never make any allegations pointed at individuals, political or otherwisee knowingly or unknowingly in the fairness of the matter. It is ones personal behavior.I always respect our ex PM Vajpayeeji for this particular point.
Most important I say that Hazare is only a social activist and his vision is at large pointed towards formulation of policy to evolve a SYSTEM aiming at cleaning the governance conducive for democracy in the larger interest of common people.
These being crux of the subject you referred,I attrubute them as vital for any student persuing political science.
    Thanks and regards,
    KRPrabhu

I think we are all a part of corruption and corrupt practises…from small things such as getting papers cleared at RTO / PWD, getting a medical / engineering seat for our kids…paying a railway TT pocket money instead of paying the actual penalty…..avoiding Customs Duty / Income Tax ….
We’ve created this DEVIL for our convenience…to get things done easy / fast…now to undo this and fall in queue is not going to be easy….at the moment everyone is excited…but look deep within…this is going to be a long…long fight…and hopefully again this is not a political gimmick….

    Well written.
Anna Hazare came to Karnataka and never utter a word against corruption going on in Karnataka.
THE DAYS ARE IMMINENT TO ALL THE CITIZENS NOT TO GIVE CORRUPTION AND NOT TO TAKE CORRUPTION.
ONLY THING IS WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR DAYS, WEEKS OR MONTHS TO ACCOMPLISH OUR RIGHTEOUS JOBS IN THE INITIAL STAGES AND GRADUALLY CORRUPTION WILL REDUCE HOWEVER CANNOT ELIMINATE.

    One small example:
In Mangalore driving licence medical checkup must be done by a government hospital Doctor where as the driving licence agents are producing duplicate and pocket 200 rupees. If anybody check thoroughly medical check up made in the government hospital or not will be clearly visible in the traffic licence issuing authorities filed papers.

In my opinion Anna Hazare has also has been colluded with the opposition.

In Karnataka votes are brought, MLA's were bought, Operation Kamala is nothing but corruption.

    Dear Bharti,
Nice letter you have written to Anna Hazare and Indeed, Hazare deserved this respect from you and from everyone for his initiative fighting against corruption.
Well, I am not here to write anything about Hazare, rather would like to say that why Anna to Karnataka? Why can’t we, you and I? Why can’t entire Karnataka? You and I are watching the fun and Hazare needs to come to stop this crap what is happening in Karnataka? Let’s stir up and lets fight ourselves. Can’t we initiate some hunger strike if not some violent acts? Why Anna needs to solve problem of all Indians? Depending on someone is been our problem always and that led to corruptions like 2 G scams by UPA and our very crimes of karnakta. I remember seeing a news in one of the English news channel ( don’t want to mention the name here, but I can if its required anywhere and by anyone) which is showing proof of selling land by BSY’S son Raghavdendra to some business man during allegations on BSY, despite having the evidence in public, that particular news channel couldn’t raise the issue further. That is perhaps, news channel would have got huge sum for hiding or disposing those documents. This is the height of corruption.
We would have seen uprising in MIDDLE EAST countries over the past months, and perhaps, its time for us to get up from our seats, go out from the houses, get away from watching news channels and walk against the corruption. We can make difference.lets be united and walk!!

Appreciate the jest of article written by the author. The need of the hour for all the supporters of the crusaders against corruption is to request their family members and friends who are working in the government offices or otherwise, not to take bribe or give bribe. And a request to the crusaders against corruption is as they have a mass following, they should instill on the psyche of the common man that corruption and lying is a crime that is equivalent or more worse than even rape and murder.

Nice initiative Bharati, but why do you want Anna Hazare to come to our state ? Why are we not getting on the roads to protest unitedly ? Do you know what is wrong with us ? In Karnataka we are not Kannadigas we are Hindu, Muslim, Christians. Some jobless paid youth run the administration and advice us on how, when, where should we go and where should we not. The public support them on the excuse of tradition/culture. Let us first strip these men and parade them, other things will improve slowly. Secondly, let us be honest ourslves first. Come out and vote for your candidate so that you can question them upon inadequate services. Let us not bribe the traffic police, peon or an officer in a public office to get away with our problem, the discipline will automatically pass on to higher level. Let our children not cheat in their exams, they will grow into responsible adults. There are several methods - its we - not Anna who must perform and agitate.
