Mangalore, Jun 29:
A newly-purchased Maruti Suzuki Swift fell into the backwaters of  Bunder port here on Wednesday June 29. The car belonging to one Abu Hurair of Ullal was parked by his driver and Hurair had gone to his office nearby.

At around 1 pm he was informed by one shopkeeper in Bunder area that his car had fallen into the water. It is said that as the car was parked in neutral gear it moved on its own and fell off the edge into the water. The driver had gone off somewhere at the time of the incident.

When Hurair arrived at the spot the front part of the car was sunk in water, but parking lights were on. The vehicle was bought just last week and was yet to be registered.

A crane lifted the car out after two people opened the car's back door and secured it with a rope. The efforts went on till around 3 pm. The locals who had gathered in large numbers also lent their hand.

When the car was out of the water, it started honking by itself, much to the amusement of the people and worry of the owner. No major damages were noticed on the car.

Let us not blame anyone for this. As it is an accident due to pur negligence! A manual transmission should never be parked in neutral and that too without parking brakes...!The man is lucky to have his car in one piece.

So sad, such a nice car got damaged. Every one must follow safety rules, 1st is to put on seat belts while driving. To park the car at a safe place with Hand brakes on & the Gear on parking position, without blocking others vehicle for automatic transmission. Even on drive position with hand breaks on the car will move if the ground is not level. For Manual gear I think gear should be on Drive position on 1st gear with hand brakes on.

Its better to leave mobile no, when we are blocking some ones vehicle.

It seems that somebody's vehicle hit at the back of this car, immediately it fell down to the water. Because i have noticed in the first picture as damaged at the backside of the car before fallen. Finally, the mobile crane again damaged the back denter. Is it proper safety procedure to pullup the car??????

    @ Prasanna,
How can you call them unemployed? They are helping to lift the car,Readers like you and me who write comments here and call them unemployed are jobless. , For your information, they are the fish mongers and small time shop keepers in Bunder, who earn enough for a happy living in mangalore.

NEETA, DUBAI.. It clearly says that the car was parked in Neutral gear.. but if u go through the user manual of suzuki it clearly says that when parking make sure the car is always parked in 1st gear for a manual car and P fpor auto cars... So its the car owners fault

i guess the car dint fall on its on instead someone has rammed the car from behind because you can see a red dent on the top of the boot which isnt possible to occur when the car is being retrieved. and where does the red paint come from at all and infact the dent was even very much visible before the car was retrieved

No one would have ever thought the car would have gone into the water and the cops would have to search high and low with no success. :)

Wonder if there was any No Parking sign at all? And no barrier/or retaining wall? What about if someone accidentally falls into the ditch while passing through that way?!

Municipal authorities should look into the matter and take appropriate safety measures. If it was a legal parking place, even if the Insurance will not pay the owner, perhaps, he can sue the Municipal Council for inadequate warning signs and safety measures and recover the cost?

I have been to the Bunder fish yard many times and seen the place so messy and in disorder, with things and objects scattered all over the place - one minute you do not pay attention when you take your step, you can land into deep trouble - either you bump into something or land in a ditch. It is high time the authorities tidy up the place and bring some order and discipline.

    Dear All,

So many comments which some of them are good and some of them are meaningless here.

If the driver was driving in UAE or gulf country then he should also know the driving systems of India too before he drives the car.
In General if he was a good driver, even the car has the hand break or No,still its indian system to park the car in the below mentioned system.

If car is parked upwards then the Gear should be in 1st.

if the car parked downwards then the Gear should be reverse.

here the driver had not used any of the important parking methods of India.

all its money matters, same kind of the thing happenned in Chikmagalore-The Gowdas of Chikmagalore are coffee planters and when there was a good price for the coffee they too purchased vehicles of various types and one of the well known friend was too driving the car in CKM city and was discussing the traffic issue.i was in the passenger seat.

the very funny in this is he wanted to take Right Turn and the indicator for the signal purpose used is Left.....here all mattered is Money not any precautions or not any Rules, as he knows only to drive but dont know to use many of the important things in his vehicle...

May be the driver who was driving the car holding a licence from Dubai and it is LEFT HAND DRIVE. He was habituated of using the gear from his right hand and while parking the car no need to pull the hand break for automatic cars.
Confused by left and right combination.

Newly appointed driver perhaps had either learners licence or bribed one. New car was sincere to its master. Unless you take care, even a machine will not obey to its master. Every one should take care before leaving idle of their car.
See the place and find for any notification " NO PARK " zone. Cops failed to tow away. But the slope towed it away....! mind it You are not eligible for insurrance cover.
