Kolkata, Jul 1: The deaths of babies at the BC Roy Government children's hospital here have been creating chaos, with families and relatives of the deceased children trying to ransack the hospital over the last few days.

On Friday July 1, the government spoke for the first time after the incident. Health secretary M N Roy said that there was no medical negligency in the death of 18 babies, but admitted that the infrastructure of the hospital was not up to the mark.

Surprisingly, health secretary neither offered an apology nor expressed any regret over the incident. Instead, he tried to defend the government saying that most of the children brought to the hospital were already critical and at least 13 of those who died had respiratory trouble and four low birth weight.
