Bantwal, April 14: Women have shown that they can make rare decorative art work out of coconut shells which in normal circumstances would be thrown away from every household after they are used.
A workshop was held for the first time on making decorative art works with coconut shells in Dakshina Kannada's Vittla Padnooru GP.
The workshop was organised by women's organisations of Sanjeevini Ookkutta for the benefit of members of self-help groups to encourage self-employment among women.
Hundreds of women took part in the workshop which was possible due to the initiative taken by Dakshina Kannada District Coconut Farmers Organisation, Nabard and Bharatiya Vikas Trust.
There is a considerable demand for products made out of coconut shells in foreign countries. Taking a cue from this demand and the losses that the coconut growers had incurred and also to provide financial succour to families, the workshop was conducted by the Organisation.
The organisation now intends to reach more women by holding such workshops every month.
