Bagalkot, Apr 15: Shavige, which increases the taste of meals prepared for functions and festivals, has turned around the fortune for a woman of Shiroor town of the district.
Neelamma, owner of Chittaragi home industries, earns Rs 6000 per day through the production of shavige in just four months from February to May as the functions and marriages do not take place during monsoon.
The shavige production runs from 6 am to 6 pm. She sells the produce to local buyers and sends the same throughout Karnataka and outstation states. Because of the quality of the Shavige that is manufactured, once the buyer tastes it, he or she will never opt for other brands.
Neelamma uses machines to prepare shavige and manual labour takes time and cost. Earlier women of the area where Neelamma lives used to prepare the shavige sitting on a wooden bench.
The simmering heat of summer months gets the shavige dried within minutes. Everyday around 100 kg of Shavige is produced. Neelamma gets Rs 60 profit for every kg of Shavige. So the daily production gives her profit of Rs 6000. For four months Neelamma earns around Rs seven lac. She has set a model for other people, who crib about unemployment, to take up self-employment and earn a handsome income.
