Doha Accident - One Indian Nurse Among Four Killed

Doha Accident - One Indian Nurse Among Four Killed

Alexis Castelino
Daijiworld Media Network - Doha

Doha, Jul 5: After one of the rear tyres of a vehicle carrying employees of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Al Khor, burst while moving at the Seimaisma Inter-change of the North Road to Al Khor on Monday July 4 morning, the driver lost control over the vehicle. The accident took away four lives while ten others were seriously injured. The deceased have been identified as Dany Anto (34) from India, Maiudeen from Sudan, and Mariane and Clara from Philippines. The accident occurred about 40 kms away from the city, and the condition of one of the injured is stated to be critical.

Deceased Indian Nurse Dany

The Toyota Hiace vehicle met with the accident within Dayaan municipal limits. Employees of the same concern, who were following the van in another vehicle, passed on information about the accident to the police and HMC. Emergency vehicles then took the injured to hospitals.

The vehicle, after getting out of the driver’s control, was tossed around before coming to a halt some distance away from the road, after tearing apart barbed wire fencing along the road. The driver of the ill-fated vehicle, which was carrying 13 employees of HMC, named Basheer, an Indian national, is among the survivors. He has been seriously wounded.

Those who lost their lives were three female nurses and a Sudanese employee of HMC. One of the killed Philipinos, who was a respiratory therapist, was pregnant, it is learnt. A nurse of Egyptian origin, who suffered grave injuries, is in very critical condition with the chances of her survival are feeble, it is gathered. The other injured persons, who are being treated in Hamad Gebneral Hospital in Doha and Al Khor Hospital, are reportedly out of danger.

Indian nurses, Rani, Elsa and Lilly, are among those admitted to Hamad General Hospital Doha, and two among them have suffered fractures, with one of them also suffering from internal injuries. The husband of Dany works for Abdulla Abdulghani and Bros Co, and the couple, natives of Cherupuzha in Kasargod, Kerala, have a 30-month-old son.  It is learnt that Dany’s sister, Tiana Thomas, also works for HMC at its hospital in Wakrah. Arrangements are being made to airlift Dany’s body to India.

The hospital sources said that they are doing everything within their control to keep the injured alive.

yes it's true because i was with this transportation 2 months ago. the maintenance is very poor to think that they are going back and forth to al khor 6x a day. they should take extra care, sometimes we are travelling with a sleepy driver.overspeeding at the interval of cameras.
we can't tell when will be our time but let's not be an instrument of others misery because of some negligence.
we are praying for our sisters who are still fighting for their lives. strength for their families.

It is really sad that a precious and innocent life is lost for no fault of hers. My heart goes out to the family of the bereaved. No doubt this could be a result of over speeding, bad tyres or negligent driving. Such disasters could be certainly avoided if the drivers are vigilant and all above factors are considered. This has caused untold misery to so many people and their families. Drivers should be extra cautious especially during the hot summer in the gulf countries for their own safety and those of their passengers.

Very sad incident I have seen the driver's of these Vans driving at very high speed. Yesterday, that is the same day evening another car was toppled which was going from Doha to Al Khor, just a few kilomer's from the same interchange. We could see one women fallen out and think she was not that bad.
During summer the tyres always bust. If it is the front one, we will not be able to contol the vehicle. Since the last 30 year's I have seen a lot of these types of accident's, but after seeing a accident people will be driving slowly for a few minutes, after that they forget and will be speeding.

Very sad accident indeed and may the departed souls rest in peace. It is a well known fact that these sort of accidents do take place due to excessive speeding, and it`s quite common in gulf countries, if you have a look at the accidents that have taken place there in the past. Moreover, now it`s summer time there, the excessive heat conditions would have contributed to bursting of the tyre. When driving a vehicle, specially when the driver is carrying the public passengers like that in this sad instance, he should be vigilant and take extra responsibility to look after the people under his care. By the way, wise comments by A.S. Mathew, which have great merit and need to be followed.

Very sad and terrible news to read.
Let their souls rest in peace.

We all need to learn some lessons
    from these accidents caused by
defective tyres or the failure in
    wearing seat belt. Until the
    government exert pressure through
penalizing the passengers for their negligence in wearing seat
    belts, it is very hard
for many people to put the seat
    belt which feels uncomfortable in
the beginning but it saves lives.

I do remember a man crying at the
funeral home looking at his wife's
dead body telling repeatedly " if she had the seat
belt, she would have lived". I
was reluctant to put seat belt in
the beginning, but now, if I don't
wear seat belt, I feel missing
    something in my body.

This article shows that Trauma epidemic is the biggest killer, especially doha. How often we we put safety belts or take children in the front seats.I think this could have been totally avoided but for the carelesness of the transporter. Not many in doha respect people in the roads. Studies have shown that wearing safety belts or following simple rules can avoid these disasters in the future. Most of the road users dont follow rules and do things which shouldnt be done.Radars are not the answer, we need legislation and the police need to punish the offenders. The offenders need to punished so that they become responsible residents of this peaceloving loving country-Qatar.
