Mangaluru, Apr 22: Residents living in and around Vas Lane road in the city are facing inconvenience for a year as the drainage work is going at snail's pace.
The concretization work which was lagging behind was recently completed after a year.
The project was approved four years ago. However, the actual work began on March 7, 2022. Demolition of nearby buildings and compound walls, reconstruction, changing of underground drainage pipeline, construction of storm water drain were to be completed.
If the flow of work would have been methodical, the work should have got over by now. However, due to improper work and digging of roads every now and then has taken a toll on the daily life of residents. They cannot bring their vehicles home and also bear with dust that generates due to road work.
Residents have faced water problems due to cutting of pipe more than 10 times while digging. Gates of some apartment buildings cannot be opened due to the work. The entrance road of a few apartments is concretized twice and dug twice. Once they closed the top portion of underground drainage then dug to fix tiles.
It is very difficult to take sick people out of apartment buildings and homes due to the dug road. Hundreds of patients arrive at the Unity hospital which lies on the end of the road. As the work is not complete, ambulances cannot arrive till the hospital gate.
A doctor who used to reside in an apartment by the side of Vas Lane has got his house shifted to Kadri as he is unable to bring and take his car to and from home as he has to attend emergency situations.
It seems the Mangaluru City Corporation is not functioning and the ward corporator is also not responding to the woes of the general public.
