Karwar: This School has Just One Student

Karwar: This school has just 1 student

Karwar, July 6, DHNS: This is a government school with perhaps the highest teacher-student ratio in the country. The school in Karwar has a lone student, who enjoys the undivided attention of a lone teacher.

What has saved this government school at Sanamudageri in the taluk from being closed is that the Mudageri Gram Panchayat (GP) had adopted a resolution that it should not be closed and submitted a memorandum to the Education department in this regard.

The GP’s contention is that there should be a Kannada school in this border area. When mediapersons asked the lone student, Ashwini Atmaram Shetkar, about this, she said: “My teacher, Shylashri, teaches very well. Please, don’t close this school.”

Though there are 86 families in Sanamudageri, parents send their children to the nearby English-medium school. Geeta Rane, the GP vice-president, who took part in the ‘Shalegagi Naavu Neevu’ programme on Tuesday, said that they would create awareness among the people on sending their children only to Kannada medium schools.

Highest student-teacher ratio - correct. A similar instance in the twin district I remember to hv observed. One school boasted of 100% pass in an Exam. The fact of the matter was that the school had sent a lone candidate for exam from that school, and that student passed the exam.

English is an international language which can be used in a lot of countries including India which had so many languages. Instead of fighting for a Kannada medium school, why cannot this government have any futuristic vision to just fight to keep the school going for the right reason of providing education as every other country does. No child will use Kannada to effectively make their point in America, Europe or Australia. Why do you want to limit your children. The medium of education should be English. Kannada should be made a compulsory language. How hard is this for one to understand. Thing big people. Stop being so egoistic n narrow minded.

Mr. Jawar, vivian is not telling any cock & bull story... indeed you can reach the top studying in vernacular medium. I know number of people who have studied in english medium, yet are unable to draft a good letter in english. Letter drafting is a talent. In anycase, I support introduction of english from 1st Standard. All schools in India should compulsorily teach Three languages 1. Local language, 2. Hindi & 3. English.

    Dear All,
i am suggesting that, kannada medium schools are not bad.this is very good for grama panchayath peoples. the way of teaching should be improved such as teaching all languages parallaly from ukg or 1st standard so that students can understand/writing/reading of all languages gradually.
The main reason for decreasing the students in govt schools are revolution in economy of parents.so they prefer to send their children to English medium schools.

I don't understand why all parents wants their children to go for english medium school from KG. Is it because of standard or money. There are many parents who cannot afford to send their children to send English medium, take loan, borrow money from others and send their children to english medium. I have seen many Gowda's children, who studied in Kannada medium and doing good and speak english too. Those who had gone to Kannada medium, they can atleast communicate in English well. Why we are neglecting our mother tongue. It is a shame for our country. Why government is not giving importance to mother tongue. Government should make Kannada language compulsory till 7th standard. There are many who studied in kannada medium, and reached top .

Congratulations teacher and student. You decided to learn in Kannada medium. I am a student of Kannada medium and now teacher in one of the CBSE English medium schools. If there is a will, there is a way. We can learn English being a Kannada medium student. Initially it may be hard but we can. It is not necessary to be in English medium for that purpose. Besides that, we learn many other languages too. Do we all go to Hindi medium to learn Hindi/Arabic school to learn Arabic. It is within us to take interest to learn various languages.Kannada medium schools are as good as English medium schools. There shouldn't be any discrimination.

One should give equal importance to the State language, National language and English.
It is very wrong to say that only people knowing English are successful.
Glaring example is Mr.Yeddurappa and Mr. Reddy the most successful people in Karnataka.

I also belongs to karwar district.During my time in 50-60's after independence probably there was only at district head quarters one english medium school and only one degree college at kumta in entire district which was started may be in the year 1949.I started learning alphabets in english in the class 8th in the high school and rest of the subjects in kannada medium only.In the college of course english is the medium of instruction. No doubt it is difficult to cope up all of a sudden in english medium. After completion of s.s.l.c I use to go for interviews on verious govt.services state as well in central.Interviews were conducted written or oral in english only. Our canditates from english school were easily get ed.Some readers sujested even kannada medium students also exelled in their life.True all may not get scope to improve by themselves.
In my opinion and with my experience it is better to inject english during 1st standard at the tender age.No doubt all must know local language like kannada. To day's world is like our neighbourhood.English is a international language. If you want to come up in life english is a must.

    Dear students,
Learn every language if possible to read and write. It is good for his/her own future benefit. Parents should encourage their children (not to use force on the children) to learn as much languages.
All languages are good and have its own goodness and sweetness which will be experienced/evident while a person is conversing in all those languages.

I am very proud of those remained 85 families of small village. Political people says that parents have to send their children to Kannada mdm school.but why they conduct an interview in English? why they dont offer enough jobs and expected Salary if you are not aware of english language. we are in 21st Century I support English education. Kannada is important only in Karnataka to talk to your kannadiga mate. that you can also learn at home. Its not my point of view that Kannada education is not good and english is good enough. I mean to say instead of studying english education only from Ist PUC lets start from Kinder Garten which makes you perfect when you reach Ist PUC & and Higher studies.

Hi rubenapinto..It is how the person takes the education. If a person wanted to achive something no one can stop them may he/she studying in english/kannada medium. I have seen many who worked in kannada medium now they are in top of the ladder. The commitement and dedication that matters. Being a Kannada medium student i have faced similiar situations but its the tranition state where we need to adjust and grow our self. We have to build the tendency to achive a goal then success will come to us. Take life as a challenge.

I beg to differ from the daijiworld readers who have commented on this story.
I studied in kannada medium till the 10th standard. When I went to 11th, I had hell of a time as all the syllabus was in English. It took quite a time for me to get adjusted to learning history in English!
Moreover, I was very hesitant to speak English as I always thought that I am inferior to boys who have studied in English medium (spoken English of English medium boys is definitely better as they are learning it from 1st standard)
In today's world if a person learns kannada what is the use? How many job opportunities are there in Karnataka?
It is very easy to preach but difficult to practice.

The education system is to be revised in Kannada medium Schools. Maths, Science should be taught in English. Social Studies and other Subjects are to be taught in Kannada. If we do this, students will learn both English and Kannada equaly. The Govt Schools/Kannada Schools Children definatly get good command over to compete with other English medium students in case of Maths, Science and in English language and can compete in CET/KOMED etc exams. To get seats in Engineering / Medical / Jobs in MNC is the fear of present parents. The education department should realise the mentality of the present parents.

Retaining a school at Sanamudageri Taluk with a lone student and a lone teacher is a classic example where India values the importance of Education in rural areas. The authorities responsible for their determination to maintain the school need be complemeented. We have visited some of the small schools in remote villages of Mulnaadu areas where six or seven tiny tots appearing in a roadside tiny school with one young teacher filled with love and enthusiasm is highly praiseworthy.

India needs focus on little things such as these where little people need support and help in interior areas with little help. This was the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and Pundit Nehru to educate India from the rural side and turn them into vibrant towns filled with intellectual values of "Real India".

While this may be a record, the trend is same in many places. In our place there is a good Kannada medium school which is about a KM away. They give free lunch in the afternoon. The inspectors regularly come to check the quality of the food. In spite of these facilities, the parents are sending their children to English medium school which is about 5 KMs away. Besides, the school fees and other charges for extra curricular activities, they also pay for the transport. People feel that their status in the society goes down, if they send them to Kannada medium school. The trend is the same in Mumbai. Parens who can not speak English will put their children in English medium school and for their home work, they will send their children to tuition classes.

Kannada Medium schools are giving quality education and people think the English medium schools only have quality eductaion and if they study english medium then only they will be good civilians, get good job etc etc. But the real truth is that people studied in Kannada Medium are competing with others equally and got success in every field. It is pain to listen kannada medium school having one student. Atlest now parents should change the thinking views. Comman man should understand and judge the value and quality of education.

Congratulations Teacher & Student.English medium is important ,but at the same time mother tongue is also very important. There was special incident happened last month in Chennai when Govt school Head Master saw District Commissioner was waiting in the Que with his wife for admission to his daughter for 1st standard. School officials thought he came to inspect school ! DC asked Head Master & teachers to treat his daughter like other students. He wanted his daughter to study Mother tongue Tamil first and then English. And more intersting thing is that DC was a GOLD Medalist in Annamalai Univesity, and topper in IAS too.
