Udupi, Apr 25: A fire broke out in the fields at Nittur, located on the outskirts here on Tuesday, April 25 afternoon, destroying several acres of land.
The fire also claimed the lives of several birds and animals due to the smoke and heat.
The fire was first spotted in the Baliga area of Nittur at approximately 2 pm and quickly spread to several acres of fields, bamboos, and shrubs. A number of peacocks, tortoises, snakes, mongooses, and other animals lost their lives in the blaze, although there was no damage to any houses in the area.
Two fire brigades from Udupi and Malpe were alerted to the situation and arrived at the scene in an effort to douse the flames. The fire was extinguished under the guidance of Udupi fire station assistant inspector Mohammed Ghouse.
As a precautionary measure, water was sprinkled around the nearby houses. The area was engulfed with smoke that spread to the city due to the breeze.
