Mangalore: MRPL Employee Johnson Rosario (21) Crushed by Crane

Mangalore: Johnson Rosario (21) Working For MRPL Firm Crushed by Crane

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 8: In a fateful incident that occurred within the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) compound on Thursday July 7, Johnson Santosh Rosario (21), working for Punj Lloyd, a company working on contract basis for MRPL, came under the boom lift of a huge crane. He died within minutes of the accident. Johnson had joined Punj Lloyd around two weeks back, as safety officer.

Johnson, a resident of Taremar in Kuppepedavu near here, used to stay in company quarters. He had planned to vacate company quarters and commute to the place of work from his residence since yesterday. On Thursday morning, he reported for work in the morning, signed the attendance register, and was walking towards his place of duty, when he came under the boom lift of a crane being operated by JDCL, another contractor firm of MRPL.

Johnson had completed hotel management course, before completing safety officer course through Western Institute of Technology. He had joined a company in Pune in January this year as safety officer. After working there for about six months, he had returned home after bagging a job in Punj Lloyd. Johnson, who used to stay at the company’s residential quarters in Lady Hill, had visited his family in Kuppepadavu on Saturday last. He visited his family again on Wednesday night to collect a key he had forgotten there during his previous visit, and that was the last time his family got to see him alive.

Johnson was the second of the three children of Albert Rosario and Juliet from Taremar Kuppepadavu. His elder brother, Jaison, works abroad, while his younger sister, Jovita, is continuing with her education.

In the said freak accident, the boom lift of the crane came crashing down all of a sudden. It fell on a vehicle and then bounced on to Johnson, and its rods pierced through the ribcage of Johnson. He died before he could be provided medical assistance.

All India Workers Union has condemned the JDCL management for negligence of the company as well as its crane operator for the incident. On Thursday, protests were staged by workers in both Punj Lloyd and JDCL. Union general secretary, Sudatta Jain, announced that bandh will be observed on Friday, and that the union will carry on with its agitation till proper compensation is disbursed to the family of the deceased. He alleged that company officials did not visit the spot for about half an hour after the incident, and that Johnson had to be carried in another vehicle as ambulance was not available in the company premises.

The family has put forth a demand for a compensation of Rs 20 lac, it is lelarnt. JDCL company executives are expected to arrive in the city from New Delhi to take stock of the situation and arrive at a decision today.

A SHOCKING NEWS FOR ME!! UN BEARABLE MOMENT,A GREAT LOSS FOR THEIR FAMILY ALSO TO THE VILLAGE OF KUPPEPADAVU, It has been appointed once for a man to die
    But after this the judgement
Once the appointment has been made
Nothing can be done to change it
No need to be afraid of the greetings of death
Will you be wrapped in the chains of torment?
Or pass from life unto death?
The power of death knows not one
But to live you must die
Life is for those who have offered their lives
To live is Christ to die is to gain.
MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.

The area should have been cordorned off and inspected by the polie. Remember this is a crime scene as it is death caused by negligence - they should check the last inspection report and the fitness certificate as well as the crane driver's certificate. The inspection report is valid for 1 year as is the fitness certificate. Any lapse and then this amounts to man-slaughter and the persons responsible should be jailed. A sum of not less than 50lakhs should be awarded.

Very tragic accident lack of safety controls, and situational awreness in the workplace. The crane operator and his company must be brought to justice. This is a manslaughter. The family should seek lost wages and compensation of at least 250 lacs because the employee was 21, and he had at least another 35 years productive life and he would have earned at least 12 lacs/year in compensation. Therefore 250 lacs, the family should seek, is just compensation for a loss of young life. The famiily should seek a "injury qualified lawyer" and file an criminal action in the court, and shall not settle until (a) safety measures are implemented in the work place and (b) 250 lacs compensation for lost wages has been paid to the family.

May his soul rest in peace. It's because may be the operator was swinging with more speed just to get work done faster or he is not trained. It's better to stay a bit away from crane area even if you have helmet because in many cases even the crane hook may fall on to ground wihthout any indication in sites.

This shows what is our safety standards. Once in year every crane must be inspected by 3rd party approved inspector,Lack of maintenance and inspection resulted in an accident. No one checking contractor equipment and thier safety records, a matter to think about our safety standards and how we can improve to avoid these kind of accidents in near future. Employer is responsible to provide safe equipment to work & safe working environment/place to work to his employee, all safety officers those working in industries have to convince their Management to provide employee rights & regular inspectiona and maintenance of equiment and work place by doing so we can avoid most of the accidents/incidents.

May the soul rest in peace. It is shocking that innocent Jonson Santhosh became a victim to the grave negligence of an operator. Proper investigation should be carried out, do he have proper crane operator competancy certificate, his efficiency, medical check up to find out whether he normal in his mental status & eye sight. Crane operator should know SWINGING RADIAS OF BLOCK(Pendulum Movement), His coordination with JOY STICK, Brake pedals, Work Load Area should be PERFECT. Either this Crane Operator Crazy Guy or UNSKILLED CRANE OPERATOR. PROPER INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT TO AVOID SUCH ACCIDENT IN FUTURE.

Very sad news and in fact, shocking indeed! A precious life of a young and budding youth is lost due to a freak accident, - Johnson was just unlucky to be around that place, I suppose, which is unfortunate. All the same, a young, budding and precious life is lost forever, and proper investigation should be initiated as to how such an accident happened, and how to avoid recurrence of such mishaps. Also, the next-of-kin of the young man needs to be compensated appropriately. May Johnson`s soul rest in peace. Condolences to the bereaved family.
