Panaji, Jul 8: Auxiliary bishop of the Mumbai Archdiocese Agnelo Rufino Gracias has been chosen The Goan Review’s 'Personality of the Year - 2010-11' for his dedicated service to  society in general and the Konkani language and culture in particular.

Originally from Colva, Goa, Bishop Agnelo was born in Mombassa, Kenya, Africa, on July 30, 1939. After finishing his priestly studies through the diocesan seminary, Parel and St Pius X College, Goregaon, he was ordained priest on December 21, 1962.

Upon his return, he joined the St Pius X College as professor and spiritual director on June 1, 1975. On June 1, 1985 he was appointed the rector of St Pius X College and held the position till May 31, 1993. He also taught Konkani subject to the seminarians during these years.

He served as parish priest at St Michael’s Church, Mahim from June 1, 2000 to February 2001.

He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Bombay on March 13, 2001 and ordained bishop by Cardinal Ivan Dias on April 21, 2001. At Holy Name we were doubly blessed to have Bp. Agnelo with us as a young priest and then as a Bishop. Besides promoting Konkani it is his humility, spirituality and availability that stands out. Congratulations your Lordship. Truly well deserved.

I met Bp. Agnelo in the year 1963 a newly ordained Priest, posted at The Holy Name Cathedral, ever since then we have been closely related.

For almost 5 years I lost contact as was sent for his higher studies in Rome. The next I saw him at the St.Pius Seminary as Rector and now as Bishop.

A dynamic person always welcoming with a smile. Though tired physically and mentally exhausted he always made time for those who
came to him with their problems.

The seminarians would always something good to tell about him. I have directed some cases to him, and they came back thanking God and Bishop Agnelo.

Let us not forget to pray for him on 30th July
