Kundapur, Jul 9: Sounding satirical, Karnataka Lokayukta, Justice N Santosh Hegde, felt that the politicians have been frequenting various temples instead of  discharging their duties sincerely, in an attempt to make the gods partners in their corrupt activities. “The Lord has not yet given in to their prayers to succumb to lure of wealth. Now that there are reasons to believe that huge wealth is stashed away beneath the temples, the politicians may begin to go under the ground to pay obeisance there,” he said.

Justice Hegde was replying to questions posed by the students in a programme of interaction organized with the students of Bhandarkars Arts and Science College, Kundapur on Friday July 8. The programme was jointly organized by the college and the old students association of the college. The interaction was arranged on the topics of National Lokpal Bill and prevention of corruption in the country.

“Egotism mixed with corruption is a dangerous concoction. The politicians have both these qualities aplenty. The fact that a MP, in his comments after participating in a meeting of the civil society representatives with the government on the bill, questioned as to  how can those who have never won an election question the elected representatives, proves their haughtiness,” Hegde explained. He said that corruption will grow as long as the people do not cultivate the habit to feel satisfied with what they have, and  expressed concern about the fact that the gap between the haves and have-nots in the country has been growing with each passing year. “Poor are becoming poorer, rich are becoming richer,” he added.

He gave the examples of the recent happenings in the parliament and assembly sessions to show how has the system of legislature stooped to new low after independence. He said that successive governments had not given in to frequent demands spread over the last 44 years for framing of the Lokpal Bill, and that the present government is unwilling to hold discussions on draft bill. “On December 23, 2008, 17 bills were passed by the parliament without any discussions, including a bill that withdrew the power of subjecting corrupt public servants to inquiry and punish them, from the Lokayukta. This shows the commitment level of our people’s representatives,” he fumed.

He said that the only difference the civil society representatives and the government have on the Lokpal Bill is the exclusion of Prime Minister and judiciary from the purview of this bill. The civil society wants to bring both of them within the Lokpal jurisdiction, he said.

He said that the state Lokayukta does not intend to spare any of the politicians. He lamented the fact that the Lokayukta has the power to only hold investigations, but not of punishing the guilty, which is vested with the courts.

To a question of a student as to on what basis had he termed the lathi charge on Baba Ramdev in New Delhi as wrong, Hegde reiterated that the policemen had the option of waking up the protestors, or waiting till the next morning. He asserted that assaulting a person in the dark was not the right step.

Manipal Academy of General Education administrative officer, Dr H Shantaram, presided. Principal, Prof Doma Chandrashekhar, delivered introductory address. President of the old students association, K C Rajesh, welcomed. Lecturer, Navin Shetty presented the programme.

Ramesh, Udupi since DURGADAS supported BJP you are saying that he has to be hanged?? Your comment clearly indicates that you cannot digest BJP ruling our state. When it comes to voting people of our state are clever and no one can fool them by distributing sarees, money etc. Do you know that there was recent corporation by poll election in Bangalore and BJP won in that. The area is more dominated by minorities. Even minorities have realized the caste politics of congress and are voting in favour of BJP.

Ramesh Udupi,Partially I agree with you what you aired,But your last para concerning Durgadas Suvarna Mangalore, not acceptable.Everybody has their own opinion and Daiji has given us to exhibit/air in this forum.Using criminal word is unfortunate and uncalled for.

As far as Lokayukta concerned,do you know how much power Govt of Karnataka has given him?Even they were withdrawn honest officers from Hegde. His hands are tied!It is internal fact which he don't want to disclose. of course his roots are from RSS and everybody knows that but how he discharged his duty is as a non partisan officer.Give another two weeks he will disclose all pros and cons of his tenure as a Lokayukta Karnataka. Therefore, judging Santhosh Hegade,Lokayukta @ this juncture not fair and what he gained goodwill of Karnataka people is a witness.

    Justice Hegde,
You made all these statements out of B'lore. the bribing of gods and temples is not the new story, its happening now more than 2 1/2 years. The question is wshat Lokkhaykta's contributin to Karnataka people over the years instead catching of small fishes likes revenue inspector, village accountants, Govt hospital officials etc... and importantly only at gatherings like students and college students you give your statement like this but not at government offcials meet or politicians and important whenever you meet any swamijis .....

"has power to only hold investigations, but not of punishing the guilty", why not produce strong evidence such that court has no option but to punish the guilty? What has been the success of such investigation so far? Is there a loo hole that is causing all this investigation and allegations are being brushed off due to lack of evidence?

HEGDE CAN OPENLY MENTION YEDDY'S NAME BUT WHY HE IS SCADE TO REMOVE YEDDY'S NAME IS A QUESTION MARK ? HEGDE IS JUST HINTING AND NOT MENTIONING ANY NAME ? WHO IS THE PERSON WHO IS VISITING TEMPLES ? ITS YEDDY AND HIS MINISTER. HDK VISITING TEMPLES NO ONE IS BOTHERED AS HE IS NOT IN THE GOVERNMENT AND NOT RULING KARNATAKA SO THAT DOES NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE. SANTHOSH HEGDE IS STILL NOT COMING CLAEN ABOUT YEDDY'S SCAMS. GOD KNOWS WHAT IS THE HIDDEN AGENDA ? MAY BE HEGDE IS BRIBED NOT TO UTTER YEDDY'S NAME OR HE HAS BEEN THREATEND BY YEDDY AND BJP HIGH COMMAND. WHEN HEGDE TALKS ABOUT CORRUPTION IT IS SURPRISING HE COUD NOT TAKE ACTION AGAINST CM YEDDY EVEN THOUGH SCAMS ARE STILL GOING ON AND YEDDY STILL LOOTING. DURGADAS SUVARNA, BJP IS WINNING EACH AND EVERY ELECTION NOT IN A HONEST WAY BUY IN A ILLEEGAL WAY. BJP IS GIVING SAREES AND NOTE BUNDLES TO PEOPLE TO GET VOTES. BJP IS ALWAYS BUSY WITH OPERATION KAMALA. SO DON'T THINK THAT BJP IS WINNING ELECTION IN A PROPER MANNER. BJP IS MUCH BETTER THAN ANY OTHER POLITICAL PARTY IN LOOTING AND IN SCAMS NOT IN GOVERNANCE. YEDDY IS ENJOYING IN TAX PAYERS MONEY. SO DURGADAS NO NEED OF PRAISING HEGDE. EVERYONE KNOWS SINCE MORE THAN 3 YEARS WHAT YEDDY DID AND DOING NOW. YOU ALSO GOT A SHARE MAY BE IN THE LOOTED MONEY. THAT IS WHY YOU ARE PRAISING YEDDY. SHAMELESS PERSONS LIKE YOU DURGADAS SHOULD BE HANGED IN PUBLIC HEAD DOWN AND LEG UPWARDS AND STONED TO DEATH.

Perhaps Justice Santhosh Hegde aiming to Yeddy and HDK. I guess there 27 days to go to retire from Lokayukta and here after we can see more 'ASTRAs' in Hegde's "BATTHALIKE" relating to moral grounds and legal grounds. In an interview yesterday he reiterated that the trust which public bestowed up on him will be honored with in his span of service!!So everybody waiting to hear it.Good luck sir, and go ahead.
