Rahul's Rally Not Eyeing Elections: Digvijay

Aligarh, Jul 9 (IANS): Even as Rahul Gandhi's grand rally for farmers in Uttar Pradesh is being seen as a prelude to the Congress party's campaign for the state assembly elections, party general secretary Digvijay Singh denied it.

Talking to reporters here, Digvijay Singh said the aim of the rally is the "prosperity of farmers".

"Elections are not the aim of this mahapanchayat, the aim is prosperity and happiness of farmers," he said.

"Rahul Gandhi's padyatra (foot march) has increased the faith of farmers," he added.

Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are due in 2012.

The rally here, which Gandhi will address later Saturday, is the culmination of his five-day foot march in the state.

Rahul Gandhi's foot march, which started Tuesday from Bhatta-Parsaul village, close to the national capital, was to address the issue of land acquisition in the state.
