Mangalore: Conversion Raises its Ugly Head Again …

Mangalore: Conversion Raises its Ugly Head Again …

Puttur / Mangalore, Jul 10: Some lessons in life are learnt only through personal experiences and that is what Lancy Praveen D Souza, who works as a mason helper cum watchman in the city, realized to his utter dismay in the last few months.  When 15 year old Karthik  one evening approached him seeking help to find a job desperately,  the young man responded taking pity for the young boy without realizing that his act  of showing sympathy to a fellow in need would put him in dire straits.

Life took a cruel turn for Lancy Praveen ever since and he has been ‘punished’ for his act of kindness as a result of the ploy scripted by those who are bent upon creating distrust and disharmony among different religious faiths.   Lancy  underwent 7 days in jail and one day in Uppinangadi  police station as he has been charged with section 295 (a) for conversion and section 506 for kidnapping  of Karthik by the  Uppinangadi police.  After the recent unsavory incident where Jillu, a juice shop owner was falsely accused of conversion,  this is another attempt by some miscreants to create panic and dissonance in Mangalore among diverse religious faiths.

Having undergone this ordeal, Lancy who was released on conditional bail from Mangalore sub-jail on July 7, 2011, is a tad saddened and perplexed by the turn of events of his life for no fault of his.  Members of Indian Federation of Karnataka Christian Association (IFKCA) from Udupi and Mangalore and other good Samaritans came to his rescue on having learnt about the incident and played a crucial role in releasing him on bail.

However, Lancy cannot claim respite from the nightmare as he has to report to the Uppinangadi Police station every Sunday and is uncertain as to what awaits him in future.  A cursory look at the young and naïve Lancy, who has studies only up to 5th standard and works hard both during day and night, and after talking to him one can deduce that he cannot even think about such a plot of converting  Karthik or anyone leave alone carrying out such machinations.

Lancy,  who hails from Arva parish in Belthangady Taluk, works as a mason helper during day and as a night watchman in one of the apartments in the city,  came across Karthik who told him a sob story  that he was in dire need of a job and gained his confidence and implored him to help get a job.    Except his name Lancy did not know anything about Karthik, who said he hails from Puttur. But that did not stop Lancy from helping him in finding a job. Karthik even came to his home and stayed with his family in Arva before Lancy could find a job for him. Finally he arranged a job for the boy in a hospital canteen in Badyar, as he knew the canteen people.

Within a few days Lancy got a phone from the canteen saying they had some suspicions about the boy.  Karthik even had mobile which he said he had bought from the money he had.  Karthik then left the job and again contacted Lancy and came to his home at Arva and stayed there.  By using Lancy’s brother’s sim on his mobile without the knowledge of his brother,    Karthik called his home people and had told them where he was in Madikeri.

Soon Lancy, who was working in Mangalore, got a call from his parents saying Karthik’s relatives,(his borther-in-law and uncle) had come searching for him at their house.  It was then revealed by these relatives that Karthik who was studying in 9th std  had come absconding from home after stealing huge amount of cash from ATM of his uncle.  When his relatives insisted that he come back home Karthik told that he would come back only if Lancy Praveen comes with him.  Lancy, who did not suspect Karthik despite new revelations, agreed and his naiveté landed him in Uppinangadi Police station.

He was shocked when police asked him why he was Keeping Karthik at his home but even then he did not realize the severity of the trouble he was in.  One police officer who was in mufti even beat him with a stick and they took his signature for an undertaking and also took Rs. 300/- from him saying “we are trying to save you from further trouble.
Otherwise these people would have smashed you into pieces for trying to convert Karthik”.  Lancy and his family had a shock of their lives when they read in the papers the next day that he was arrested on charges for forcible conversion.

This incident occurred in November 2010 and in between Karthik kept calling Lancy from various landlines despite his advice not to contact him. Despite the unpleasant experience Lancy says “I had a soft corner for Karthik because he kept telling me I have difficulty at home.  My home people are torturing me and I want to work and wanted my help”.  Once again   when Karthik insisted he wanted to meet and talk to him, Lancy met him near Kanchan school in Uppinangady  last Friday, 30th  June, 2011  and when he requested  money  he gave him Rs. 50/- and came to bus stand to come back to Mangalore.    However, soon a crowd had gathered near the bus stand which started abusing him and Lancy who really got scared boarded a bus back to Mangalore.

The next day, he got a call from his parents saying two police had come searching for Lancy  in a jeep and took his younger brother Melvyn who was at home, to the police station as  Lancy was in Mangalore.  When Lancy arrived at the station he found Karthik and his uncle and other relatives and some members of an organization (known for its communal intonations) who tried to intimidate him.

The police told him that he was trying to create trouble despite giving a written undertaking to the police just a few months back. The police then stripped him of the rosary and sacred threads he was wearing and locked him up in the police station. The next day, which was a Saturday, he was brought to Mangalore sub jail and   police demanded Rs. 1000/- from his family as transportation cost to bring him to Mangalore.   Strange but true!

Lancy even says  when he was brought to Mangalore one of the complainants, said to be an uncle of Karthik, one Ramesh, who works in Dharmasthala, threatened him with dire consequences once he comes out of the jail on bail.   Having spent 6 days in Mangalore sub-jail Lancy was released yesterday (7-7-2011) on conditional bail.  Having learnt about the incident members of IFKCA swung into action and succeeded in getting him released on bail.

Though Lancy’s mother informed the Arva Parish priest and parish council members, none of them has come forward to his rescue, which has saddened the family considerably.  Prashanth Jathanna, VP of IFKCA, Udupi, Peter Danthy, member IFKCA, Gladson Karkada, Praveen Kumar, Hemanth, Alwyn, Sunil, Dennis D Silva, state convener of IFKCA, Roshan Castelino, Alwyn  D Souza, John D Souza and Vinod Lasrado have  been instrumental in coming to the rescue of Lancy and his family which has no one else to look up to for help in the hour of their crisis.

Lancy’s father Anthony D Souza who had come to the jail to take his son back is befogged by the turn of events and is visibly upset by the false complaint and the difficulty that befell on his family.  “My son just took pity on this young boy and tried to help him without knowing the consequences of his action and now we are suffering this humiliation”, he says.

The entire episode has all the necessary ingredients required to inflame communal frenzy among people.   It is nothing but a crude and uncanny effort by Karthik’s family, relatives and their cronies to hide the ignominy of Karthik running away from home.  It looks as though, to hide this mortification they have scripted a plot of conversion and kidnapping, and innocent bakras like Lancy have fallen easy prey to their mischief.  It was nothing but an attempt to obscure Karthik’s misdemeanor,  as running away from home by stealing money is a disgrace for the family.

The sad part is that the ghost of conversion has come in handy for communal and fundamentalist forces to enkindle communal frenzy and show their true colour while trying to masquerade the skeletons in their cupboards.  One wonders how many more Lancy’s will become the sacrificial goats in the altar of the alleged conversion plots.

The minority christian organisations denounce the Hindu religion as "bad" because they have the caste system and this and that. They have no right to denounce other religions as it is a serious crime.

Why these chritians are promoting hatred against various religions in India? The Hindus have never said that other religions are bad to expand their religion.

Well having read the story and the comments, i felt the comments written by well edu. readers becomes sufficient to create a communal tension on the internet zone. The written exchanges itself show an undercurrent of communal tension or send a wrong message to ignorant people or people who are already biased on this issue. Then when people confront each other, what happens there is just a result of this undercurrent. The end result-burnt vehicles, curfew, dirty politics & lots of losses. We realize we become pawns of the opportunists. The written exchanges show a sense of pride and self sufficiency in us. Whereas we ourselves know that we need people in our society irrespective of religion coz each of us have a definite role to play, whether as business owners or students.

As owners, we cannot ignore the fact that our customers, our employees should be treated as equals in terms of religion or caste, coz only then there can be any harmony. As students or employees, we learn to imbibe the good in the other and ignore the negatives. If we take petty things like caste discrimination, we will sow what we reap. The outcome is a tense atmostphere , with clashing egos and flying tempers trying to put each other down. This tr We can never be at peace that way and this tends to seep into families too. If as adults we behave this way, then what can we teach the coming generations. Well children too are not blind to see what they are parents practice& preach. My prayers for Lancy and those helpin

Uppinangady Police workers have to be honoured with Cowdung and should be made naked for being communal in their activities. That is the highest honour police of Karnataka and India atlarge can have. Because, they outs of studies and don't even pass university studies and pass their tests by copying or on merit. They need to be taught a lesson by the public. Is it not a shame to have in a civilized and educated society the unqualified and uncivilized police crew to tame culprits. DD report says:

'Though Lancy’s mother informed the Arva Parish priest and parish council members, none of them has come forward to his rescue, which has saddened the family considerably.' (one can not expect much from them!)

Of course, our priests give good sermons, parishioners sing and pray like 'gili baipata', but when it comes to actual assistance, they wash their hands like 'Pilat' but do not hesitate to gossip about it.

Surprisingly, our Konkana (must be educated) morons imply 'conversion' was mentioned!!

I trust all the priests have read about this and advise the 'flok' accordingly.

I wish this report included Kartik's story, not just one sided reporting from police file.

Recently Ronaldo Colaco & progressive minded people have met Prabhakar Bhat & have impressed him regarding our community & its activities.
In Naravi our community people had joined with our Hindu brethren in Shramadhan & functions of temple.
Probably some people doesn't want the harmonious relationship we have with each other from 2000 years.
    Now BLAME-
Our local church people did nothing!-
If our religious heads or institutions were under attack then they want us to help them-but when it came to lay people nobody comes forward when their leadershep need to step in.
    SOLUTION-
Catholics need to organise outside our religious Heads & institutions- to CONTORL,MANAGE & CLEANSE IT OF COMMERCIALISATION & MISMANGAEMENT of our Prestige Institutions.
In USA- one organisation is already working & Cleansing it off Past misdeeds of our clergy. Its named "Catholics4Change"(a website already giving daily progress).
Let our able leaders too comeout & start its work in Coastal region-so that we can bring Change in our functioning & Let us be HARBINGERS of HOPE, CHANGE, PROGRESS & PEACE in RIGHT direction. Otherwise our institutions will turn into churners of wealth managed or mismanaged by our clergy & only handpicked leaders of their liking(with no transparency)!

In this news, one sided story is written. Unless we listen to the other side, making comments is not appropriate. The parish priest does not come forward to help Lancy which means 'daal mein kuch kala hai'.

This is a clear strategy of hardline Hindu's to trap Lancy with an intention to creat the virus of hatredness among Hindu's towards peace loving Christians.
I believe the thug's party is making/creating an atmosphere ready to attack Minority Community (II innings) sooner than later.
Conclusion:- those who provoke (obviously the upper class think tank in hardline party controlled from Nagpur)is hatching & incubating the virus of hatredness among other fellow innocent peace loving Hindu's to engage in these kind of acts (by further protecting them indirectly through the law & order machinery).
Thus, disturb the peace of mind among innocent hindu's and make them suffer mentally life long for causing damage to the members of innocent minority community members. However, the love of christ along can give them peace to substantiate further I quote the words of Jesus Christ " Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing"

What Kartik needs is a good old sound spanking for all the trouble he has created and landed an innocent man into jail. Hereafter no one ever will help any genuine destitute for fear of repurcussions. As for Karthik's parents and relatives, well now you are trying to hide his crime of stealing and absconding but wait and see one day this same karthik will bring disgrace to you all by turning into a bigger rogue and thief, if you do not straighten him now itself. In case you are unable to correct him, place him in juvenile remand for couple of weeks, let him taste the punishment that he has got his unsuspecting saviour into.

I feel pity for Lancy, but he has to pay the price not taking the police warning seriously. It's a lesson for all of us before we help someone investigate the case prior we get trapped in it.

It is very clear from this report that a communal group by threatening both the parties i.e. Lancy Group & Karthik Group have created stories in their own taste suited to their agenda. It is very clear that such communal groups don't know to do good work nor allow or tolerate others doing good work. And some section of the Police Department seem more than willing to help these elements who are evil to our Society. Appreciate the efforts taken by IFKCA in bailing Lancy out.

Dear christian brothers and sisters, Please stop helping anyone these days...they may back bite and results in painful tragedy. I did help 2 people and had to spend more than rs 150,000 to come out of my case which ran 3 years and 2 months .Today every body feels sorry because they know i am innocent. But what me and my family went though all this time, no one replace it. Shame on people !!! I feel so sorry for this young man.God is with you.Religion is sick and its for sick minded people.God has no religion, except that you love God and love one another.

In the whole story there is no statement from karthik regarding this issue, Why karthik has done like this....Why his family is hiding the real fact...if he has stolen any amount from his family, police should arrest him also. police is doing only one sided enquiry

Karntaka is going to dogs under the rule of stupid BJP and sangh parivar. They are responsible for the lawlessness and law and order situation in our state. The old and rusted Advani, is the main person behind this hate and venom. I am sure he will face the penalty of God both before his death and afterwards..... He cant please Lord Ram unless he pleases his country men.

Why this people want to create problems for Christians who are helping them to find jobs, all their family problems they will give conversion tag and try create problems from nowhere. That’s the reason central govt. is bringing new bill for communal harmony. Police are helping these fanatics by all means.

False police complaints should be punished as contempt of law.false complainants if not punished with heavy fine this more false complaints will be lodged with police and it is as usual police always side with the majority religion and the police themselves belong to the majority community will not get justice.
It should be made mandatory to police to verify the facts and then arrest and punish the guilty. And police is siding any community should also be punished

This is a good lesson for us Christians. We want to employ non-catholics in our establishments. We are happy to throw away lavish parties to non-Christians with 'soro & Dukramaas', we feel pity for underprevileged non-catholics when we have enough poor people in our own community. Now atleast take an oath and stop feeding Cobras. Mr. Lancy, you opened my eyes. I have decided to send away 5 employees of my Restaurant fearing Lancy's fate awaiting for me in the future.

The missing point is ATHITHI DEVOBHAVE.
My sympathies for enduring sufferings for the sake of Jesus Christ.
Your love, assistance, genoricity, hardwork deffinetely will be rewarded which made you scapegoat by the Athithi Devobhava people. Forgive them. May our Lord and savour Jesus christ bless you abundantly

Stop this please. Is there anybody in charge of law and order in Mangalore. We are just fed up. It is becoming difficult just living a simple life. Even if I have to go to a restaurant with my wife for a drink and dinner, I need to think a hundred times, lest some one thinks that I am doing wrong by sitting with a lady and having a drink. Just fed up. How can you lock up a person on suspicion, and that too of coversion. It just shows the weakness of the police department.

Is Karthik's parents are that blind to trap Lancy? or prejudice?

Why Lancy again and again want to help Karthik in spite of police warning?

I guess Lancy had soft corner and compassionate ground to help Karthik but why parents of Lancy not interfered?

If Lancy for a moment we assume that he tried to convert Karthik, then where was the statement of Karthik or why not police did not interrogate him?

Between the lines there could be more missing links which puzzles every one. Unilaterally an said org taking the issue as they liked is condemnable as both are "AKAL MANDIS"These kind of individual conversion of teen is not heard before and the people around this incident deliberate whole episode and come to the conclusion for the interest of the human society.

No wonder more and more people nowadays are becoming selfish, self-centred, and minding their own business, and they don`t want to know anything about other`s welfare or well being. They hesitate to extend a helping hand even though they are capable of, precisely because of such cases. In the process, of course, a person who is in genuine need of some help or assistance from his friends or contacts, in whatever form it may be, tend to get suffer, which indeed is a pity.

Only one cunning person like that of Karthik is more than enough to spoil the entire goodwill and good intention amongst the community. I am sure, Karthik is not acting alone in this case and I am sure he is driven by some vested interest. It is apparent that the Police and the law governing authorities have also not been much helpful in this case, as they have not gone deep into their investigations to find out the actual facts. I am sure justice will prevail ultimately for the good samaritan Lancy, and he will be properly compensated for the stress, hardship, and the disrepute and inconvenience caused to him.

Orige upakari ellade mandemari. Lancy himself who has not completed basic education could be learning many lessons from this incident. One need not have the knowledge of rocket science, if one is living in and around Mangalore that whole society is going through trust deposit among the communities. If he had done the same thing to a Christian boy there would not have been any trouble. All need to have basic sense of what is legal and what is illegal. It is illegal to get a child employed. Legal thing would have been to find out immediately from the boy about his family what they must be going through. Take the consent of the guardians even in writing. Today every body having cell phone communication has become so easy. Lancy having rosary around his neck, entertaining a second time the boy and giving Rs 50/- to a juvenile offender tell that Lancy is penny wise and pound foolish. I have lurking doubt that by and by he spoke to the boy if the boy wanted to become a Catholic. There is an adage in Konkani language “ Udrak lokadache kamah”. No one should expect the pp and parish council to involve in this stupidity. I suggest that parishes arrange crash courses to understand the helping nature of Mangaloreans in modern society and impart the thought that charity begins at home. This also will educate clergy that they have to look after their own first.

What are the cops upto...instead of protecting the public they are creating a sense of fear with public. This is happening because of the support from top. If this prevails then the days wont be far if a person just talks to another person of different community the person will go to jail. God bless Karnataka n her people.

Poor Lancy. As when people do good always they get in problems. So long catholic people are getting all in troubles for no reasons. Stop helping people and only help christians.
Best ways to live now a days is like Al Queda terrorist ways, enjoy life , convert openely regardless all people, attack countries, kidnap, rap, steal, murder nobody cares because these terrors has no state or moral. Christains come on too much moral, prayers, when some hits turn another cheek of your please forget it and come to a main stage and fight back if law is not protecting go another ways. THese police men are so corrupt has no respect for truth. Enough is enough Christian are powerful and no need to worry. So these corrupt men and dare consequences of thier neglegence,.

Very saddened to read this real story of Lancy. Good Samaritan treated as a criminal in this case. What a society we are living in! Everything happens in the name of religion - wars, bombing, mischief, blames, forgery, victimization! Communities lost peace and brotherhood. Even helping the needy gets you an award of criminal activity! When these fanatics go away from the face of this beautiful earth?
