Mangaluru, May 6: The interlock that was installed on the footpath of Padavinangady is damaged within four months of completion of work. The point to be noted is that this ward belongs to mayor Jayanand Anchan.
Underground drainage and footpath was constructed on both sides of the road that leads to the international airport. Only few interlocks are remaining and they are definitely going to come off during the monsoon season according to the public.
Local resident Kishore said, “Most of the interlocks installed on the footpaths are broken though there are very few pedestrians who walk on them. They have become brittle due to extreme heat. People are scared to walk on footpath also as they are suspicious about the quality of slab that is fixed for the underground drainage.”
Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) engineers are supposed to go the site and check the quality of work once it is finished and then pass the bill of the contractor. But most of the MCC engineers do not check the actual work and pass the bill sitting in the office. Crores of rupees of taxpayers’ money is getting wasted in this manner.
Local resident Pramod says, “Corporator of the ward should check the quality of work that is going on in his or her ward. It seems that this work is done only for the purpose of billing. Otherwise the interlocks would not have broken so early.”
Channabasappa, MCC commissioner said, “If the interlocks are broken within few months of laying them, definitely the quality of work that is done is substandard. Action will be taken against the contractor.”
