Udupi, May 13: A youth, wearing a saffron shawl, agent of Byndoor legislative assembly constituency, attempted to enter the vote counting centre by tying mobile on his leg. Alert police foiled his attempt and he was sent back.
Sadashiv Kanchgodu, Byndoor BJP candidate's agent is the person who tried to smuggle the mobile phone inside the counting centre.
The strong room was opened at 7.30 am at St Cecily Education Institution in the heart of the city, where the counting of votes will be held for five legislative constituencies of Udupi district. The postal ballots will be counted first at 8am. Counting of EVM votes will begin at 8.30 am.
Heavy police security is put up near the counting centre. In addition, police force is present in junctions of the city and other sensitive areas of the district. Prohibitory orders are in place in the district from 6 am on May 13 to 6 am on May 14.
Special security arrangements are made at the vote counting centre. All people entering the vote counting centre and frisked by the police. Hundreds of police are deputed in and around the vote counting centre. In total, 1500 cops are deputed for the vote counting work. Mobile phones of everyone entering the premises of counting centre are collected by the police at the entrance.
