Mangaluru, May 22: Over 30 girl students of a private nursing college in the city fell ill due to suspected food poisoning.

It is said that due to the water crisis this mishap has occurred. Parents of the students say that this is the second time in two months that the students have taken ill due to food poisoning.

Some students reportedly vomited, had dysentery and severe stomach ache. It is learnt that the students who fell sick were admitted to the hospital in the night and in the morning they were sent back to the hostel.

I know a student studying in a local medical college and he says that their hostel don't even provide proper drinking water or hot water but still force students from other parts of Karnataka to stay in hostel compulsorily. Even in their college students repeatedly get food poisoning due to the bad hygiene of food. Whoever gave the statement that they evaluate hostels is lying. It is all money games. If you are a huge institution you can pay money and silence everybody responsible for upkeeping the standards.

When the life source of potable water, Netravati, has dried up since weeks; and most open wells in and around the city are contaminated with sewage water from storm water drains, whom will one blame for such incidents; moreover borewell water is not potable unless it's treated with special filtration units! To add to the above, residential colleges and coaching institutes have been mushrooming in every nook and corner of the city without any control! Under such circumstances, pure water supply situation has become very critical; God only knows from which places the tanker mafia is sourcing their supplies!

Where and how will they do the testing when almost the entire city is being fed with borewell/tanker suppliers, which have no control over the source; also how to ensure the quality of tankers which supply the water?

Rudy sir, Very true.....water comes only mucky light yellowish colour. While drinking we boil it fine... But, we wash vessels/glasses/spoons with the same water and directly use them.. Each and every vessel we dont sterilize.....taking bath/gargling/brushing we dont use boiling water. Even i am sick same sromach infection followed by fever....causes gastric also. I was surprised even after keeping the vessels/house so clean, how i fell sick !!!

Shamkar, Mangaluru, Your comments make no sense at all. You need some treatment from the same water. Congress has nothing to do with this contaminated water.

Thats bad it is second time happening and they dont know cause. That too in a nursing school. They have to examine everywhere till cause is found.Noone to control where food is cooked :First of all its very hot outside, second that heat helps to spoil food material within no time.so must be careful.

I think health officials visit colleges only for roll call and not to inspect the food. Action shud be taken against such officials by new govt.
