Mangaluru, Jun 2: The Muslim Central Committee (R) of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts felicitated the newly elected Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader at the Town Hall here on Friday June 2.
Presiding over the function, Muslim Central Committee president Haji K S Mohammed Masood said, "I am before you not as president of the committee but as a common worker of the committee. In the state, after the position of Governor, speaker is the second highest constitutional post. Now, U T Khader is the constitutional head of the Legislature."
He also urged U T Khader to provide compensation from the government to the families of three Muslim youths who were killed in the communal clashes and do justice to the Muslim community."
Yenepoya University chancellor Y Abdulla Kunhi said, "Chief minister Siddaramaiah has provided an opportunity to U T Khader to be Speaker at a young age. This responsibility was given to Khader for his leadership quality and for following secular principles without discriminating against anyone."
He also added that people in the constituency voted for him by keeping faith in him and the love he has shown to the people of the constituency and also for his simplicity. The post of Speaker given to UT Khader is a real matter of pride for the coastal region, he said adding that, Khader as Speaker should be the voice for the voiceless, irrespective of the parties. As Speaker all political parties are to be treated equally by him, he said.
Speaker U T Khader said, "I am really happy to take part in this programme. The position that the government has given to me is a responsibility. The recent election which was held in the state was between communalism and secularism. People have given power to a secular party in the state and upheld secular credentials, harmony, peace and brotherhood.”
He also said that as Speaker, he will strive for a peaceful society and work without any bias to uphold constitutional dignity.
“Very happily I took this responsibility as Speaker. This is an opportunity given to me by the almighty and blessings of the people of the constituency. What I am now is because of the people of the constituency, seniors and party workers. As Speaker I will work sincerely without any black mark and maintain the dignity of the position,” he added.
He also lauded Muslim Central Committee for their pro-social work towards the community and to the society.
He called upon the youth to develop their personality and reach the top position in the society. There are efforts to provoke but youth should not give importance to it but work towards maintaining peace, harmony and brotherhood in society, he said.
MLC B M Farooq also spoke on the occasion.
Speaker U T Khader and Capt Haniya Haneef were felicitated.
Former MLA Mohiuddin Bava, Kanchur Monu, former police officer G A Bava and corporators were present.
Ibrahim Kodijal welcomed the guests.
Scholarships were also distributed among the students.
