Former Bishop of Karwar William D'Mello Passes Away at 82

Mangalore, Jul 19: William Leonard D’Mello, first Bishop of Karwar, peacefully breathed his last at Fr Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangalore at 11:05 am on Tuesday July 19. Derek Fernandes, Bishop of Karwar, Sr Rosa SCB, who had looked after his health for the past many years and Sr Annie SCB, who was looking after him since more than year, together with a few priests and others were at his side during his last moments.

Bishop William, as the first Bishop of Karwar, had laboured relentlessly for the all round development of the newly established diocese comprising of the civil district of Uttara Kannada. He gave an identity to the Catholic Christian Community of the district and during the 30 years of his tenure, strived for their all-round development in the spiritual, social, educational and economical spheres. His concern and service extended to all people without consideration of caste and creed. After serving with dedication and love for 30 long years, he relinquished his office as the Bishop of Karwar due to his old age and illness and his resignation was accepted by Pope Benedict XVI on February 24 2007 and Derek Fernandes was appointed as his successor.

After his retirement, Bishop William was residing at ‘Sandhya Vandan’, the Senior Clergy Home built by him at Shirwad, in the compound adjoining ‘Puneeth Sadan’, the diocesan headquarters. On March 24, 2010, under the leadership of Bishop Derek Fernandes, the priests, religious and lay faithful together his family members and friends, celebrated his 80th birthday in a simple yet joyful manner.

Subsequently, his health began deteriorating in the past one year and a couple of times he was admitted in the Fr Muller’s Hospital in Mangalore for observation and treatment. When the doctors advised that there was nothing more that could be done as age was against him, and it would be better for him to be in his own residence, Sr Annie of Maria Magnoflora Hospital, assisted by the other nurses, took care of him under the supervision of his personal physician. However, since a few days ago, he was again shifted to the hospital in Mangalore on the advice of his personal physician as his health condition was causing concern. Almost unconscious, he was kept in a specially prepared room, so that his friends and relatives could come and see him.

The third child of the six children of the late Santana and the late Joseph D’Mello, Bishop William D’Mello was born on March 24, 1931 at Cascia, which was then a part of the Rosario Cathedral parish of the Diocese of Mangalore. After his studies at St Aloysius College, Mangalore, he joined the Minor Seminary at Bangalore to become a priest for the Archdiocese of Bangalore. He did his philosophy and theology studies St Peter’s Major Seminary he imbibed the missionary spirit and zeal from the MEP Fathers (Foreign Mission Society of Parish) who were running the Seminary.

After he completed his seminary studies, he was ordained a priest on 6th April 1957 by the then Archbishop of Bangalore, . Thomas Pothakamury, one of the great stalwarts of the Church at that time. Fr D’Mello’s first appointment was as an Assistant to Msgr. William Texeira, the Vicar General who was also the Parish Priest of St Joseph’s Church, Bangalore. Both the Archbishop and the Vicar General had tremendous influence on the young priest and played an important role in giving a definite shape to his Priestly character - a practical knowledge of the Church administration, pastoral prudence, regularity in life and prayer which he has kept up to date even when he has not been keeping in good health. Within a period of six months Msgr. Texeira passed away and the heavy responsibility of running the big Parish fell on our young Assistant. But he fulfilled his duties very well to the satisfaction of his Bishop and that of the people. The very next year he was appointed an Assistant at St Patrick’s Church, the prestigious Parish in the Diocese, under late Fr Leo Vanpeen, the Parish Priest who was known for strict discipline, punctuality, order and neatness. In 1962 he was appointed as Parish Priest in Doresanipalya where he came in contact with abject poverty among his Parishioners.

Undeterred he went about helping the people not only spiritually but also materially, so that the Christians entrusted to his care may live with dignity worthy of the children of God. Very soon he came back to St Patrick’s Church as Parish Priest, and in addition to being the Parish Priest he was made the Vicar General by Archbishop Lourdusamy at a very young age in 1966. In 1972 when Cardinal Lourdusamy was promoted as the Joint Secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Msgr. William D’Mello was unanimously elected as the Vicar Capitular (Administrator of the Diocese). This is an ample proof of the fact that his Superiors and his brother Priests held him in high regard for his qualities of mind and heart. And so, as soon as Archbishop Arokiasamy took charge of the Diocese, he appointed him as his Vicar General and with a view to put his abilities, qualities and experience to the best use for the benefit of the Diocese, brought him to St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral, Fraser Town, which is a 15 minutes drive to the Archbishop’s House.

Though he was very busy with the diocesan responsibilities, he regularly visited his flock in the evenings. He had time for all those who were with him or worked with him - his Assistants, Regents, Deacons and the Seminarians who came for week-end Ministry, the Religious Sisters and other lay leaders. Thus he loved his flock and his co-operators, and they in turn loved him.

He was elected to be the Bishop of the newly-erected Diocese of Karwar in 1976 itself but the announcement was delayed due to some unavoidable circumstances and hence his Episcopal Ordination could take place only in 1977 on April 29.

With his rich pastoral experience and insights and being filled with the spirit of Vatican II renewal, he began in all earnest the building of the Church in Karwar which was very much backward spiritually and economically. True to his motto ‘Duc in Altum’ he launched out into the deep in search of the lost and visited every nook and corner of the Diocese even across the rivers and the sea, though traveling in a boat was a nightmarish experience for him. It was love at first sight both for the Pastor and the flock. Realizing the need for more Priests he began encouraging vocations to Priesthood from within and outside the Diocese and being convinced of the need of Religious to take care of the Welfare and Education of Women and Children and specially Family Apostolate, he went about knocking at the door of the Religious Congregations pleading and begging for more Sisters. As a result, there are at present more than a hundred Priests and two hundred and above women Religious working in our Diocese.

Prior to his coming very little was done as regards the renewal of liturgy and faith formation except in the Parishes where the Religious priests were working and hence superstitions and meaningless customs and traditions abounded. The Pastor and Father that he was, he took the hard decision of cleansing the faith and doing away with many age-old customs even though it hurt many. The faith-formation of the children, the youth and adults was taken up on war-footing together with preparing them for renewal of liturgy. The experience of the renewal movement in Bangalore and his pastoral prudence motivated and guided every move that the young Bishop made. His new vision of man, the Church and the society began to take concrete shape and in many of his earliest speeches and sermons he gave a call to all the people to dream a new vision and commit themselves to the Mission of fulfilling that vision.

Bishop D’Mello was always available to anyone who sought his help but at the same time equally at ease in the company of the elite. He succeeded in persuading the rich in sharing out their riches with the poor and he himself directly and through the Karwar Diocesan Development Council, Karwar Diocese Education Society and the Bala Pragathi Kendra Services, has helped innumerable children for their education and health care, carried out relief works during floods and famine, took up building of houses for the shelterless and self -help programmes.

One of his outstanding achievements in the Diocese was the promotion of the Family Apostolate. His vision of ‘loving, serving, praying and witnessing family’ which is in keeping with the Church’s teaching on the Family as a domestic Church, was given a concrete shape by the Family Commission under his able guidance and encouragement. Its activities and programmes have been highly appreciated by the other Dioceses in the region. The Clergy, the Religious, the Laity and the Bishop too can feel happy, and thank and bless God again and again for through the instrumentality of the Bishop the Diocese has remained united to a great extent.

Finally his cross, his prolonged illness which he has borne patiently and always with a smile, instead of being a block to his Mission as a Pastor, has been his greatest asset for it is this cross that has brought down innumerable blessings on his works and undertakings and consequently on the Diocese. Having zealously shepherded the new diocese for nearly 30 years, Bishop William D’Mello resigned on attaining superannuation. He had a desire to serve people even after retirement, by visiting hospitals and families, and consoling the sick and the suffering, which he often used to express. But God wanted him to suffer his illness silently and offer his suffering and pain as a loving sacrifice, which he patiently did. His memory will endure for ever. May His immortal soul rest in eternal peace of heavenly bliss.

I visited Karwar and stayed many times with my mom at the Bishops house on the hill top. He took us to visit many churches ⛪️ and villages. I also attended many of the masses he conducted and he had a great live for the poor. Be blessed 😇

I had the opportunity to witness the Episcopal Ordination of His Lordship William D'Mello in Karwar as the first Bishop the Diocese of Karwar. During his ministry and his pastoral visits to my Parish in Dandeli, I had several occasion to serve the alter as an Alter boy during his mass. It was such a grace and joy to be in his company. He always smiled and his words were so kind that many boys of our times had an influence on them which drew them to be priests in the vinyard of the Lord. As he leaves for his heavenly abode, May God grant him mercy and place him in the company of Angels and Saints. Wishing Bishop Derek and the entire fraternity of the Karwar Diaocese my deep felt condolences

Bless all priests especially those who are weak, suffering and those who are narrow minded, hard-hearted, selfish, egoistic so that let them keep up the Gospel values, your motto ‘Duc in Altum’ and look after the people of God entrusted to them with sincerity and truth.

On behalf of the people of Karwar and its Diocese, the Monteiro and Pinto clans urge the the Church and the decision makers to burry and a tomb to be built within the Karwar Church, which is consiered one of the greatest achievements of Bishop D' Mello for Christianity in general and Karwar diocese in particular.
Whenever a family member from Monteiro and Pinto clans visit India, they can have the privilege to visit the Tomb of Bishop D' Mello in the Karwar Church. Not to mention that the tomb will be a procius gift to the people of Karwar.
It's unfortunate that we were unable to address Him as Bishop D' Mello as he was so popularly known to the family as Father D' Mello and He as a man of humbleness accepted the fact and did not mind at all.
God Bless His Soul in Eternal Bliss... Amen!!

There's a lot to write about the memorable moments of each and every member of the Monteiro and Pinto Clans with Bishop D' Mello. and those memorable moments will always remain etched in our minds and hearts.
Having worked so tirelessly to develop Christianity, providing all the necessarily help, encouragement and uplift the human dignity for the needy people of his diocese is nothing short of a miracle. Even after His death if any one earnestly seek his intercession with Jesus, Mary and Joseph, he will always be happy to do on our behalf.
I am confident as days go by there will be many miracles happen through Bishop D' Mello's interecession and time will come when he will be called 'Blessed' eventually making way for His 'Sainthood'. Bishop D' Mello deserves this privilege.
Bishop D' Mello was such a simple man, he did not make any one feel that he is a Bishop but a warm, loving, caring and compassionate Holy Man doing what he likes most in the service of His Creator.
May the Faithfully Departed Soul Rest in Eternal Peace... Amen!!

When I heard the news of Bishop's passing away at 2.30 pm on the 19th, I was a bit shaken but was also relieved that the suffering of this great servant of God is over. His house is just 2 blocks away from my house and I knew him, his mother and a brother, Gregory (known to us as 'Gigu')His mother, Santhanbai, used to come to my house sometimes and would call my wife, "Felcy, how r u? or what r u doing"?, speak for a few minutes and would go. Bishop had inherited all the good qualities of his mother. When she passed away, at the request of the family members, I offered tributes to her in the presence of her worthy son: Bishop William. Now, from my home I offer my sincere condolences to the faithul of Karwar Diocese on the loss of their dear Shepherd.
May his soul rest with his creator - Lord Jesus, Amen.

With profound sorrow the Monteiro and Pinto Clans, spread across the four continents, will miss very dearly His Excellency Rt. Rev. W. M. D'mello.
The clans came into contact with His Excellency when he joined St. Joseph's Church, Bangalore in 1957. Ever since each and every member of the family is known to Him. Not to mention I was his alter boy.
His Excellency was always a jolly good man had twinkle in those eyes ever smiling and joking warm, kind. compassionate and ever helpful.
My most memorable moments with His Excellency was when He personally consecrated my wedding in 1982 at St. Michael's Church, Bangalore driving all the way from Karwar. Such was His commitment to the family.
In 2007 I paid a courtesy visit to Karwar in the company of my wife and daughter. Though He was suffering a lot due to His poor health, yet He was so anxiously waiting to welcome us to his humble abode with instructions to His people there to give a special attention during our stay. When he saw us, his face was radiant with joy. He personally celebrated the Eucharist on our Silver Jubelee and organised a small get together as well. As a special tribute to those loving people, My daughter Nadin presented a classical dance performace. When I told Him about returning, He said "So soon... why don't you stay few more days "
Just a day before I thought of Him and I told my wife there's no news from Bishop D'Mello. Gem of a Man we will miss him.
May His Soul Rest in Peace... Amen!

It is with deep sorrow but with thanksgiving to God I receive that my dear friend Bishop William DeMello slept in the Lord. While he was in Bangalore as the parish priest and also VG we developed a closer friendship and our ecumenical fellowship was built without any barriers or bounds in the cause of the church. I had the privilege of attending his Ordination and Installation ceremony of the Karwar diocese and also seeing how proud he was when his mother was presented and blessed by Pope John Paul VI on his historic visit to Mangalore. His devoted and dedicated leadership to build the new Karwar diocese is commendable so also his faithful ministry and mission of all these years. I will cherish a beautiful letter he wrote to me few years ago and our mutual respect in the cause of the church. May his soul rest in peace! And may our Lord grant him eternal reward for all his labor of love for the glory of God!

We have just learned with profound sorrow of the passing away of Rt. Rev. Bishop William D’Melllo, former Bishop of Karwar, at Fr. Muller Medical College Hospital.

Bishop William offered the whole of his life as a wonderful witness to Jesus Christ. Being the First Bishop of Karwar Diocese, His Grace, Bishop William D’Mello, devoted his Episcopal Ministry in the service of poor and the downtrodden. The people of Karwar Diocese surely testify of his love for humanity and the views expressed through this column by the people who had personally experienced his love and spiritual guidance would serve as testimony.

My late father, who had attended His Grace’s Episcopal Ordination, described him as ‘a truly wonderful human being in a world that has only a few of them’.

His Grace was committed to the underprivileged and the marginalized of his Diocese and being close to his people he was aware of and understood their sufferings, trials and tribulations and worked for their all round upliftment.

May there be comfort in knowing that someone so special will never be forgotten and will always live on in our hearts particularly of people of Karwar Diocese.

Eternal Rest Grant unto Him O, Lord and May His Soul Rest in Peace ! Amen

I repent the demise of Bishop William D'Mello. When I met him at Karwar in 1980 in a jaycee club Inaugural function, his disposition towards me and the organisation was beyond words to describe. A thorough priest. He was a noble person, humane and true shepherd of the Lord.God loved him. May his soul rest in Peace.

prayerful Condolences to Bishop Rt. Rev. William D’Mello & his family.I knew Rev Fr William D'mellow when he was parish priest of St Patrick's Church residency road/Brigade Road,When I was a teenager studying in St Joseph's Indian high School in 1963,He was such a lovely priest and a humble one too,His Holy Masses were a joy to attend in St Patrick's Parish,He later was appointed as Vicar General of the Diocese of Bangalore under Archbishop Pakiam Arokiaswamy who was unceremonially shunted out of Bangalore Diocese by a gruop of Peusdo kannada Priests who created hell and agitation in front of Bishop's in Jayamahal,Rev Fr William D'mellow was in charge of Bangalore for about four years,He turned down his appointment as Archbishop Of Bangalore Diocese,He was appointed Bishop of Karwar,Later Rev Fr Alphnsus Mathias was appointed as ArchBishop followed By Rev Fr Ignatius Pinto and Now Rev Fr Bernard Moreas is the present Archbishop Of Bangalore Diocese.Bishop Most Rev William D'mellow was a true follower of Lord Jesus,I pray other new priests of Bangalore/Mangalore/Karwar/Mysore/Bellary diocese emulate his humble and polite ways to the Lord.May his great Soul Rest In Peace with the Lord !

He was a humble priest and quietly suffered his ailments for the past several years with a perpetual smile. On behalf of my sisters Aurelia,

Having worked for the Diocese of Karwar have known this companionate, loving and gentle soul. The developmental works he initiated and completed speaks of his visionary qualities. One who not only was cheerful in himself but who gave much cheerfulness to others. I feel comforted with the thought that i had the privilege to know him. Thank you Bishop D’mello for all that you did for the less fortunate, for strengthening the faith of the flock you shepherded. May god grant you heavenly reward. Adieu Most Rev. Bishop William D’mello. You will be remembered forever.

William Leonard D’Mello, first Bishop of Karwar led a fulfilled priestly life and he dedicated his life to God and the poor.
His life was convincing and he should be taken by other priests as an example.
One of his outstanding achievements in the Diocese was the promotion of the Family Apostolate.
He did so much for famililies and for the poor.
The Catholic church has lost a great son and an outstanding bishop.

Very very sad news of the demise of Rt Rev.Dr.William D'Mello.Though his birth house was very close to my grandfather's house in Jeppu Kudpadi Road of Casia Parish, I happened to meet him in person for the first time along with my mother in 1975 when he was the Vicar General as well as Parish Priest of St.Francis Xavier's Cathedral,in St.John's Church road,Bangalore.I went to see him to get some councelling from him.He was happened to visit my grandfather Late Inthru Menezes often when I was staying in Menezes Nivas which is just few yards away from his house. My grandfather's people were calling him fondly as Willie. And finally when he was admitted to St.John's Medical Hospital,Bangalore for some ailment, I went to see him.

When I met him for the first time at St.Francis Xavier's Cathedral,Bangalore in 1975, for some councelling, he inspired me with useful teachings & thoughts. He was very friendly and kind enough. He had a very good heart. And what I am today is all because of his teachings and inspiration towards me.May God grant him eternal rest and may his soul rest in peace. And also God give his dear ones and the parishioners of Karwar diocese, strength and courage to bear this loss.
    RIP Bishop D'Mello.

I am inspired by your love for the poor and the suffering. You have left behind the flock that you have loved, cared and served a diocese that has grown and developed.Your hard work and a sense of humour has brought you back many a times from those anxious moments when you tasted death. I thank God for giving me the privilege of witnessing your last moments of suffering with the Lord.As you have toiled by launching into the deep, may you share the hundredfold in the Kingdom.

Very sad to hear of the demise of his Grace, Rt. Rev. Bishop DMello. I remember him fondly since my school days at St. Patricks. He has been a role model and an inspiration to all of us at St. Patricks. A very friendly, kind hearted and ever helpful person that he was. He had been a great help to me and my brothers during our school days.We miss him dearly. May his soul rest in peace.
