Mangaluru: KNS holds 61st edition of singing competition audition at Don Bosco Hall

Media Release

Mangaluru, July 14: The 61st edition of Konkani Natak Sabha’s (KNS) audition round of the singing competition was held on Sunday, July 13, from 1:30 pm onwards at Don Bosco Hall, Mangaluru, as part of its annual competitions.

The event began with a prayer and the KNS anthem. Fr Rocky D’Cunha OFM Cap, president of KNS, welcomed the participants, judges, and audience.

The competition was inaugurated with a lamp-lighting ceremony by general secretary Pamela Santos, assistant secretary Jerome Moras, and treasurer Ivan D’Silva, along with judges and competition convenors Joseph Theodore and Flavia Violet Mascarenhas.

NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael D’Souza was the chief guest. Floyd D’Mello, vice president of KNS, highlighted Michael D’Souza’s contributions during the renovation of Don Bosco Hall. He also announced that Michael had generously sponsored the entire singing competition for the next five years and the Kalakar Puraskar awards for the next ten years. These awards are given annually to three outstanding drama artistes.

In his address, Michael D’Souza expressed his happiness in being part of the activities conducted by KNS. He fondly recalled participating in the KNS singing competition during the late 1980s in the married couple category. He thanked Fr Rocky D’Cunha and all the office-bearers for their efforts in organising the competitions and promoting Konkani art and culture. He also urged parents to support their children in taking part in Konkani competitions and encouraged KNS to continue organising more such community-driven events.

A total of 187 participants across five categories, with 145 entries, showcased their talents in solo, duet, and group formats.

The event received valuable support from KNS manager Gerald Concessao. Tabulation was handled by former vice president Sunil Menezes. Overall coordination was managed by KNS Cascia, Bejai, Urwa, Bondel, and Ladies Units, along with the KNS managing committee members.

Renowned singers Meera Florence Crasta, Edith D’Souza, and Rony Crasta served as judges for the competition.

Loy Rego compered the programme, supported by Anil D’Cunha and Gladys Pereira. Joseph Theodore introduced the judges, and Flavia Violet Mascarenhas delivered the vote of thanks.
