Udupi, Jun 14: Renowned saxophonist and saxophone guru Sunder Sherigar, hailing from Alevur here passed away on Wednesday June 14 morning. He was 76.
Sherigar was one first to train students to play the saxophone in Udupi. He has taught thousands of students to play the instrument in Udupi Mangaluru area.
Students trained by Sherigar are delivering saxophone performances at national and international levels this day. Sherigar’s granddaughter Pooja Devadiga is a famous saxophonist in Mumbai, who was trained by him.
Sherigar is survived by a son and three daughters.
He had also received an honorary doctorate degree from International Virtual Peace University and honours from various organizations.
Sherigar was one of the first to train women play the saxophone. He had also received the zilla Rajyotsava award. He had performed not only in Karnataka, but also in Kerala, Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Mumbai, and other parts of the country. Sherigar also performed during the utsava in various temples of Udupi district.
