'Why can't I become CM', says Parameshwara, exposing faultlines in Congress govt

Bengaluru, Jun 14 (IANS): Karnataka Minister for Home and prominent Dalit leader Dr. G. Parameshwara's statements on Dalits being deprived of the post of Chief Minister in the state has not only triggered the Dalit CM debate but also revealed that all is not well within the Congress government.

"When I was the President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), even after bringing the party to power in 2013, I could not become the CM. Though the party achieved success under my leadership, no one gave the credit to me. I also did not claim. In 2018, the party had to taste defeat as it neglected Dalits. The so-called big leaders, who neglected the community, had to be taught a lesson in the elections," said Parameshwara.

He said this while addressing the Scheduled Castes congregation organised by various Dalit groups at Ambedkar Bhavan here on Tuesday.

The minister further claimed that intentionally Dalit leaders are being denied the post of the CM in the party. "Why can't I, or Minister for Social Welfare Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies K.H. Muniyappa become Chief Ministers?" Parameshwara stated. "We have to shed inferiority and get united," he gave a call to Dalit leaders.

Sources in the Congress said that the party is worried about the development and watching the turn of events carefully in Karnataka.

The party is worried over the development as it might threaten the unity of the party which is looking formidable at present. Dalits and other backward classes had rallied behind the Congress during the recent Assembly polls and the party is not ready to take the risk of losing the vote bank on any count, especially before the Lok Sabha and Bengaluru civic polls.

The high command has managed to broker peace between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM and state President D.K. Shivakumar. The duo seems to be strongly going ahead, and the BJP has not able to get the momentum even one month after the elections.

Parameshwara is one of the prominent Dalit leaders and senior Congressman, who never changed his loyalty in his career.

It is an open secret in the state political corridors that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ensured the defeat of Parameshwara in state Assembly election of 2013 to wrestle the post of CM. Parameshwara, who was the state party president then, was not considered for the post following his defeat. Sources stated Parameshwara is not happy and still remembers the betrayal handed over to him.

The so-called big leaders, who neglected the community, had to be taught a lesson in the elections," Parameshwar stated.

He further claimed that intentionally Dalit leaders are being denied the post of the CM in the party.

Karnataka state has never had a Dalit CM after Independence. Though prominent leaders emerged from the community, including Mallikarjun Kharge, no one made it to the CM's post.

Mallikarjun Kharge missed the opportunity by a whisker when the JD(S)- Congress coalition government came to power in 2004. Sources said that though Congress party was keen to make Mallikarjun Kharge as the CM, the JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda favoured the late Dharam Singh. Congress came to power in the 2013 election and Parameshewar was the party president. He lost the opportunity as he lost elections from the Koratagere seat.

Though JD(S) and BJP have Dalit leadership, the party is not grooming any leader for the top post. On the contrary Congress party has many prominent and strong leaders from the Dalit and oppressed classes. It is to be seen what turn the Dalit CM debate takes in the Congress party.

Dear parameshwar, Please note that there are more efficient and able leaders than you in Congress to lead the position and to be CM. Siddu is one of such mass leader with mass appeal. Without Siddu and DKS, congress is zero in Karnataka. You are no where near to these duos in ability and appeal. Be grateful to Congress for whatever it has given to you and do not be amongst the ungratefuls. Thanks and regards

It is not possible to please each and everyone as senior most leaders are eyeing on chief minister's post and firmly believe they are eligible for the same and disclosing their ambition doesn't go against party. I think State Home Ministers post has equal value as chief Minister.

Ask not what party can do for you but what can you do for the party. It’s natural that everybody is ambitious but everybody can not become a leader. There is no compulsion or threat in congress for anyone wants to pursue their dreams and are free to do so which deems fit to them.

GROUPISM IN CONGRESS - DKS GROUP - -SIDDU GROUP etc etc -- These are all political gimmicks -- pressure points -- if DK assumes he can automatically become CM after general elections -- 2024 -- as alleged or as reported ---- now itself various pressures created as tactics -- this will ensure a compromise and SHRI SIDDU will continue peacefully for next remaining years ---- finally remains to be seen how many MLA 's remain or back with CM potential candidate --

who doesn’t want to become CM? A Muslim, Christian, Dalit, kuruba, Brahmin, lingayita, vokkaliga..... list goes on. Tragedy is, they don’t even remember that it’s the voters of all these communities together elects them. So an CM or PM represents all these communities. No wonder our country will still remain as an developing country for another 100 years.

Why Parameshwara to be chosen as Chief Minister, when there is Siddaramaiah is already there as an able administrator in the party. This only shows the greed of Parameshwara. Congress should take disciplinary action against him and remove him from the party so that no one should dare to pass unwanted comments and demoralise the leadership. People have chosen congress with much expectations and to deliver the good governance. All the leaders in congress party should understand their responsibilities and it is not only the power, but also service to people. Now they have an opportunity for the welfare of people, and any unwanted controversies may take them to big disaster.

Came into power, ate, travelled, felicitated, lost, complained, came into power and the loop goes on. We people are to be blamed for all this!

This is a never ending grivances from every congress leader, big or small. Though it is natural for a party like congress, which has representatives from every walk of life, the cracks come with individual ambition and accepted leadership. Congress need to setup a grivances committe, from both level to the highest level, addressing these issues conviencingly within the party platform.

During the stand off at the 'Gandhi 'residence for CM selection, DKS justified that 'he has age on his side , Siddu is old and just won from a safe 'muslim' constituency that was given as a courtesy as it was his last election'. Siddus last card was ''DKS has many cases on money laundering , on bail and it will send wrong signals if he is the CM. So its not clear how you justify yourself? How are you better than those 2 ?
