Centre 'deliberately not providing' rice to Karnataka, alleges Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Jun 14 (IANS): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said that the Centre is "doing politics" in reagrds to the free rice distribution scheme and "deliberately not providing" the commodity to the state.

Addressing mediapersons in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said: "Food Corporation of India's (FCI) deputy manager has informed that it has seven lakh tonne rice in stock. In spite of having stock, why is the Centre not supplying rice? BJP leaders are anti-poor. They are resorting to all these tactics to bring a bad name to the Congress government."

"We are requesting the Chhattisgarh government to supply rice," he stated.

"We had a discussion with the FCI's deputy manager. He had assured the state Food and Civil Supplies Minister K. H. Muniyappa and us to supply rice. He had also written a letter on June 12 and promised to supply rice with the consent from the Centre. After this development, the Central government has taken a political decision," Chief Minister Siddaramaiah alleged.

"It was agreed to provide 2,08,425 metric tonnes of rice to Karnataka. But, they have written a letter on June 13 saying that the states can't be provided wheat and rice under the Open Market Sales Scheme (OMSS). The Central government has taken a political decision deciding not to give rice to Karnataka, only to bring bad name to the Congress government," Siddaramaiah charged.

"The Centre is carrying out a conspiracy to ensure that the free rice scheme is not implemented in the state. Whatever conspiracy it might be, we will try to implement the scheme. The Tamil Nadu government has not given 100 per cent assurance in terms of providing rice. Muniyappa will reach Telangana and a clear picture will come out after discussion with the CM and ministers there," he claimed.

The five guarantees are already announced and their commencement dates are also being declared. The first guarantee of free travel for women is already in place. "We have promised 10 kilograms of rice for Antyodaya card holders. Presently, the state government is providing five kilograms of rice. We had been told that five kilograms would be given in addition. If we have to give free rice, 2.28 lakh metric tonne rice is required," said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

It will cost Rs 34 per kilogram and Rs 2.60 will be in addition for the transportation. For Anna Bhagya scheme, the government will incur Rs 840 crore expenditure a month, and for a year, Rs 10,092 crore is required. The state has no financial crunch to purchase additional rice and there is no problem for ongoing schemes, he said.

Under the chaiwala p.m., regime poor and middle classes were severely neglected and their wallets were emptied/severely effected. Youth have no jobs, PSU's were privatized to make finance for election campaigns of chaiwala, Annabagya (ಅನ್ನ ಭಾಗ್ಯ) scheme is a prestigious program of Congress to feed the Poor's. Indira canteen was there to give food to everyone of Karnataka, The BJP ex govt stopped Indira canteens all over Karnataka. The BJP themselves, RSS, Bajaranga Dal, VHP are all fed from the corrupt money from the central and from the state. If Annabagya (ಅನ್ನ ಭಾಗ್ಯ) is stalled from the central Congress will definitely deliver it. However, surely God's wrath shall fall upon them who has stalled Annabagya (ಅನ್ನ ಭಾಗ್ಯ) program upon them. Sure.

BJP openly says in its election rallies, "Only double engine govt can give better govt". That mean, if Non-BJP party forms state govt, Center will not support! BJP is worried about Congress landslide victory and Congress popularity even after election. People are very happy that, Congress govt implemented 5 guarantees as promised. So, BJP, which never fulfils promise, is putting all its efforts to defame Siddu govt & tie his hands!

This is way beyond 'not supporting' the Karnataka government for supplies from FCI. They are actively working in sabotage and undermine the legitimate government in place.

This is not a new practice. BJP always treats Non BJP ruled states not at par with BJP ruled States. Time to bring a change at the center too.

Why to cry that centre is not giving rice. why not buy locally. Karnataka is growing rice very much. Raichur, Charamraj Nagar, mandya, Ballari etc are growing rice, which is feeding whole states, but still Centre is not giving rice. stop blame game and start buying rice from local farmers. give them good MSP.

You want food at FCI to rot 7 Lakhs tons of rice????..The officials at FCI had agreed to give rice knowing the consumption and replenishing rate but centre is brining in hurdles to stop it. BTW, how much did you care for farmers to give good MSP to farmers during your rule??.?. Congress knows how to take care of farmers and farmers have voted for congress. We don’t need your advice.

This is well known popular double engine centre govt’s double engine development. Even if court orders it to distribute rice to poor centre will bring in ordinance to stop it. Same is happening Delhi against AAP by centre stopping through its ordinance to stop benefits to poor in Delhi.

centre state arrangement should be abolished...it is high time...every state has to loook after its revenue and spending independently...only areas like immigration, defence and border control needs to be centralized with a central committee consisitng of one member of each state and UTs ...this way the centtre's bossism can be removed..
