Lokayukta Mining Report: Will Yeddy Get Another Lifeline?

Mysore, Jul 22: In the last three years, Yeddyurappa's reign as chief minister of Karnataka has not been smooth at all. He has survived at least three threats to his chair, when he came very close to stepping down, but escaped thanks to his powerful contacts within the BJP central leadership. Now, the mining report comes as yet another test for him, and all eyes are on his arrival from his holiday on Monday. Speculations are rife over whether he would put down his papers or continue in power.

Well, according to experts, odds are in favour of CM Yeddyurappa. There are a couple of crucial points, that may help the CM get yet another lifeline.

First and foremost, despite the leaked report on mining naming Yeddyurappa, the BJP central leadership has been defending him, and is not in favour of his resignation. BJP high command has strong reasons to support him, after all.

It may be recalled that Delhi Lokayukta (ombudsman) Manmohan Sarin recently came down heavily on Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, saying she had misrepresented facts about the completion of 60,000 low-cost flats ahead of their distribution in the run-up to the 2008 assembly elections. The Lokayukta has recommended President Pratibha Patil to censure her. But Sheila Dixit rejected the report, and continued in power. And now, BJP is making full use of this point to defend Yeddyurappa.

"Why should there be two yardsticks, one for Congress and another for BJP? Why has Sheila Dixit not resigned ?" asks BJP.

On the other hand, Karnataka JD(S) chief and MP Kumaraswamy who was considered as the strongest opponent to Yeddyurappa has little voice now to demand Yeddy's resignation, as his name too is included in the report.

Until and unless Kumaraswamy resigns as MP as well as state JD(S) chief, he cannot attack Yeddyurappa.

In Karnataka, though Congress is considered as the main opposition party with over 70 MLAs in the assembly, it has never been a strong opposition. Compared to JD(S), Congress has looked softer during Yeddyurappa's times of crises.

The only strong point that may see Yeddyurappa's ouster from power is state governor Bhardwaj's statement on Friday, when he said if the Lokayukta report finds Yeddyurappa at fault, he would take appropriate action according to the Constitution. Speaking to press persons in Bangalore, the governor praised Santosh Hegde, describing him as a great and clean person whose report should be honoured.

In Mauritius, Yeddyurappa spoke to Times Now channel and rubbished the demands for his resignation. He said, "I have done nothing wrong, on Monday I will fly directly to Delhi, meet the high command and discuss the issue. I will remain as the chief minister of Karnataka for the next two years."

Considering the prevailing situation, it looks like Yeddyurappa will survive another test, but surely not so easily, as he might have to face tough opposition nationwide, unlike in the past when it was limited to state.

This drama of Lokayukta report will only serve only the uppercaste ministers & the one who supports them. The recent case has been that the ex-chief minister of Karnataka, S M Krishna who is a foreign minister now has been given clean chit by the anti-corruption team Lokayukta in Karnataka. S M Krishna gave about one thousand mining leases for the uppercaste northy business men in India illegally and plundered the state of all its wealth.

Because of his service to upper caste members, he has been given a plum portfolio in the UPA cabinet and a clean chit by the Lokayukta head santosh hegde who is also an uppercaste. So the end result of this is to protect some bania and brahamans and jail the rest.

Jossey Saldanha, Mumbai / Mapusa first and foremost we dont need your advise with regards to Karnataka. You should have stayed in Taliban then you would have come to know what is Karnataka and what is taliban. It's not like you sitting in Mumbai or Mapusa and commenting that there is no difference between Karnataka and Taliban. The people like you purposefully wish our state to become like Taliban.

I am unable to understand why BJP high command is so much afraid to take action on one of the most corrupt chief minister of Karnataka? Are they also the beneficiary of the corruption activity by Mr. Yeddyurappa?

By diverting the attention or pointing fingers at Sheila Dixit, whether the corruption and nepotism carried out by Yedyurappa is going to reduce. Sheila Dixit was not indicted by Lok Ayukta or Shinglu committee for corruption but for misrepresenting facts and delay in commonwealth games. I am of the opinion that Sheila Dixit also should be censured for this mishap but Yedyurappa’s act is more serious and requires more stringent punishment for running the government as his family business by way of corruption, nepotism and land grabbing.

This Yedyurappa is a shameless person and he may go to any extent to save his chair. I request civil society led by Anna Hazare to take the note of developments in Karnataka. This is the right time for the people to revolt if BJP High Command is unable to take action against Yedyurappa.

Ofcourse, Yeddy will survive this time also, as he has survived from the donkey sacrifice offered by his opponents for his end. As long as Karnataka is rich in natural resources and as long as he is shameless, he can survive everytime with his looted money. Ali Baba is champion of all scams and he has few blind supporters who struggle to prove him as clean CM.

Of course he will get another lifeline. How can BJP let the only flag in the south be brought down for some stupid reason as corruption. We are Indians and we are CORRUPT, and we should take pride in this national trait. I am sure those who are pointing a finger at Congress and Italy have their minds open to assimilate all the news of powerful people in the congress and its allies making their way to prisons, even at the cost of porobable downfall of the government itself.

It is time BJP showed some strength in its values and ethics, and I am sure if they would go back to Mr. Vajpayee and do as he tells them, there would be a completely different image to itself, making us believe in them either as a good ruling party or as a ethically clean and strong opposition. Jai Hind

When everybody expects 100% he will survive i doubt this time he will lose his chair. If he does not resign or if the BJP high command does not ask for his resignition than the Congress Govt at centre has every moral right(if not legal ) to release A Raja, Kalmady, and others.

Mr Yeddy its enough. You have made enough fortune for you and your family. Thank you. NOW At least Lets BJP High command takes some reasonable action.

Of course yess! Yeddiurappa will continue. There is no doubt about this. There is no one in Karnataka to replace him now. Even the Governer tried to remove him, but failed. Unless the people of Karnataka find a suitable replcement, they will be ruled by BJP and Yeddiurappa. People of Karnataka know very well the congress leaders are good, but for nothing. Devegowda & his son Kumarasway are pure opportunists. So who is left to rule Karnataka!!!
