Mangaluru, Jun 26: Police commissioner Kuldeep Jain said the department is ensuring stringent action against offenders involved in narcotic drug cases.
Addressing the media on Monday June 26, he said, “We are keeping a close watch on drug peddlers and will take stringent action to make Mangaluru free from drugs. We are conducting drug awareness programmes in educational institutions. We have identified 288 educational institutions and listed out their total strength. During the awareness programme, police, doctors and FSL staff will be present. Meanwhile, we will collect the necessary information about peddlers. We have also conducted raids in shops who were selling tobacco and cigarettes in the vicinity of school and colleges. We have booked cases and imposed fines on 150 such shops.
“The department has conducted counselling sessions to 100 drug consumers who tested positive in the last 4 months to ensure that they are out from the clutches of drug usage.
“We will conduct more such counselling sessions for those who have consumed drugs in the last 3 years. There are 700 such drug consumers of which 25% are students. We will see their present situation and have a one-to-one discussion. This year, 130 kg ganja and 550 gram synthetic drugs have been seized. As many as 38 peddlers and 130 consumers were also arrested,” he said.
