Mangalore: Abhishek Das Wins 5th FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament

Mangalore, Jul 23: Abhishek Das of South Western Railway emerged winner in the Indian Overseas Bank 5th Mangalore FIDE Rated Open International Chess tournament 2011 that concluded at Radhakrishna Temple Hall, GT Road, Mangalore on Saturday July 23.
Das outplayed Konguvel in his favourite variation of Sicilian Pelikan defence. After a tense middle game Das was able to threaten with his passed pawn and to win the game in 71 moves. Three players Suvrajit Saha of WB, Shyam Nikhil of TN and Thejkumar of Karnataka took the joint second spot with 9 points apiece. While Saha made a safe draw with Shyam on the top board , Thejkumar beat Saptarshi Roy from the black side of Colle Zukertort variation in 41 moves.
Top seed Laxman was back into form by beating Ravi Hegde to score 8 points. Thipsay on the other hand was stretched by Sriram Sarja before winning the rook and bishop ending with equal pawns. Sriram Jha of Delhi drew with Hemant Sharma, both of Delhi.
M Narendra, CMD, IOB, the chief guest on the occasion distributed the prizes.
The four medalists of Special Olympics-2011 in Athens, Greece, Dhanya S Rao (2 gold medals in roller skating), a student of Chetana Bala Vikasa Kendra; Royston Pinto (1 gold medal in roller skating) and Anil Mendonca (1 bronze medalin volley ball), both students of St Agnes Special School; Pramila Pinto (1 gold and bronze medal in roller skating) a student of Manasa Rehabilitation and Training Centre, Pamboor, Shirva in Udupi were felicitated on the occasion.
Deputy speaker N Yogish Bhat, city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, zilla panchayat president K T Shailaja Bhat among others were present.
Gururaj, organising secretary of the 5th FIDE Chess Tournament welcomed the gathering. Lydia D’Cunha proposed the vote of thanks.
