Mangaluru: Monsoon exposes poor quality of road construction, potholes return

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (KR)

Mangaluru, Jun 28: The recent heavy showers have yet again exposed the poor quality of road construction in the city. Every year, after the monsoon ends, the potholes on the roads are just shabbily patched up, and they re-emerge again during the onset of the following year’s monsoon.

The Nanthoor junction is filled with potholes every year. This year too, numerous potholes have emerged around the junction, because of the heavy rains that Mangaluru has witnessed in the last few days. The potholes here are very dangerous, especially for motorists. Last year, these potholes in Nanthoor and Bikarnakatte claimed valuable lives.

It may be recalled, a youngster lost his life in an attempt to avoid a pothole at Bikarnakatte Kandettu Cross, August last year. The pothole had been filled after the incident.

In April earlier this year, a killer pothole emerged opposite SCS pre-school Bikarnakatte due to pipe leakage. It was repaired a week later.

However, the same potholes have remerged again this year, causing a safety hazard to thousands who are accessing these roads every day.

Complaints are raised every year about the pathetic quality of these roads during the monsoon season, but the roads are still poorly repaired, leading to the re-emergence of these potholes.

During the monsoon, these potholes get filled with water, and it is difficult for drivers and riders to judge their depth and size, especially in the night.

Daijiworld have been highlighting the pathetic conditions of the roads at Nanthoor and Bikarnakatte every year, but despite bringing it to their notice, the concerned authorities fail to take accurate measures.

The concerned authorities need to act quickly and repair these pothole-filled roads to prevent further fatal injuries and casualties in the city.

Authorities won't be bothered as life is cheap here and every incident is forgotten after some time. The MP had clearly told to not ask for roads, drainage and water. There are other important topics to keep our so called educated people busy.

No use of making any comments regarding 40% commission, because voters have rejected them. Now new Government must set right this. Now next turn is our MCC to pack up.

Someone earlier rightly said... Roads, bridges and public works must be named after the contractor who has done the work... At least people will know who the guys are.... But I would add the name plate must include the local MLA and Public dept engineers responsible for quality checks n billing.... Be extra careful people... No one will remember any tragedy when it fast cools from public memory... Avaravara jeeva avaravara javabdari today on public roads....
