Puttur, Jun 30: The court here sentenced man to a year in prison and slapped a fine of Rs 3000 in a case in which he caused the death of two pedestrians at Darbe bypass three years ago.
Thomas P R from Ullal in Mangaluru was convicted by the court.
On November 2, 2020, Thomas was driving a car towards Sullia Jalsoor from Mangaluru. Near Darbe bypass on Mani-Mysuru highway, the car hit Geetha, her neighbours Ananya and Swati, and collided with a parked car belonging to Ubaid from Alekkadi.
A seriously injured Geetha, Ananya and Swati were taken to hospital. While Swati succumbed on the way to the hospital, Geetha died the day after at the hospital in Mangaluru. Ananya recovered after long medical treatment.
It was accused that the negligence and irresponsible driving of the car driver Thomas was the reason for the accident. Traffic police of Puttur filed a chargesheet against the driver. The court sentenced him to a year in prison and slapped a fine of Rs 3000.
Public prosecutor Kavita argued for the prosecution.
