Mangaluru: Well-known stray animal caretaker Rajani Shetty assaulted

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Jul 3: Renowned stray animal caretaker and rescuer Rajani Shetty was assaulted by her neighbour on Monday July 3.

Rajani was hit with a stone by her neighbour Manjula Shetty injuring her in the process. Rajani will file a complaint against Manjula.

Rajani Shetty said, “She has been fighting with me since 2 years as she has an issue with me looking after dogs in my house. She also has problems with me over usage of corporation water. She also threatened me that she will poison all my dogs to death and end her life. I have been keeping quiet since several years over this issue, but it went over the limit. She hurled a stone injuring me. I will file a complaint against her.

“Manjula says that I should stop nurturing dogs in my rented house and vacate from the place. I have been taking care of stray dogs for the past 22 years and no one had any problem. I have not faced any health issues by staying with the dogs. She has one or the other issue every single day and starts fighting with me,” said Rajani.

The incident of the assault was captured on CCTV.

Rajani Shetty, an animal lover, has been widely appreciated for rescuing animals. She feeds over 400 to 500 dogs every day and nurtures several dogs, cats and birds at her residence.

I agree that dogs are loyal animal... but so many dogs can be a problem... As a neighbour she would've been fed up with the sound and would've been mentally disturbed... We have a neighbour who has a dog... every morning a caretaker of that home takes the dog for pooping on the road side eventhough the house has enough space in their land to do this... it will get into the people who walk along to work as well as students who walks from and to school....so some people are like that... who cares

Feeding and taking care of stray cats and dogs are all good , but when so many humans are suffering when there is shortage of food and water, i think it would be a better idea to euthanize the animals and especially when you don't have the resources to take care of them, also some people make this a business they receive enough funds from donors ,so then the donation takes care of you more than the animals ,also animals carry a lot of microorganisms which may be very harmful to humans , i pity the neighbors, the stench and the airborne infections they may be subject to also we really don't know how the waste is disposed of of these animals ,if not disposed off properly it may effect the groundwater also. from what looks like this lady should find a job for herself and adopt may be two stray dogs or stray cats with her own salary and not from others donations. may sound harsh but would you be her neighbor with forty dogs barking all night long and bear the stench and risk you life.

By that logic, all healthy homeless children on streets should be enthunized too. Also, the orphanages should not run on donations and should run only on person’s salary. Sorry if it sounds harsh. Rajani Shetty looks after helpless animals and encourages sterilisation of stray dogs. People who have felt the love of animals will understand and people who see them as a burden will not understand. They make our world better. The least we can do is support someone who has dedicated their life to services.

Stray dogs, like any other animal, can vary in behavior and temperament. It's important to approach stray dogs with caution and not make assumptions about their safety. While many stray dogs are generally harmless and pose no threat, some may exhibit aggressive behavior due to fear, territorial instincts, or previous negative experiences. If you encounter a stray dog, it's best to avoid sudden movements, maintain a safe distance, and not provoke or disturb them. If the dog appears aggressive or is acting in a threatening manner, it's recommended to contact local animal control or authorities for assistance.

Stray dogs are a menace; since they have evolved from wolves, if they form a pack, they become very aggressive and ferocious especially in the nights posing risk to people who pass by them; besides they keep relentlessly barking at night! Rajni, rearing large number of dogs in the midst of many houses, is actually a big nuisance to the immediate neighbors! She should take the help of some NGO and relocate to place which is fair bit away from neighbouring houses and carry on with her noble work!

Whatever the number of dogs she cares inside her house is appreciable. But she should not feed 400-500 stray dogs everyday. She is endangering the lives of common people by indirectly growing the number of stray dogs. Don't feed the stray dogs. Eliminate them without causing pain. If you are so empathetic, adopt and rear them at home.

I too am dog lover . But dogs can be reared when you have your own independent house and a decent compound ,with walls. As they need enough space to run around and move, thats how they are built. Once upon a time prior to flats coming to DK in the 90s, it was okay. There was enough barren lands as well . But Now its impossible. There is a house every 2 feet away .There is no compound concept as well. You cannot control your dog going to someone elses compound to answer natures call. Arguements and fights have risen because of this. So I think Rajani should move somewhere in the outskirts and rent or buy an house that has a big compound.

Rajani coukd hav approached Muncipality wd regard to the maintenance of dogs and she should not take responsibility of looking after da dogs. Dese dogs shit wherever dey want jump the compounds bark and torture the other animals in neighborhood in group. Here in udupi unlimited stray dogs in every lane with so many babies everytime. When someone below said 'Kannur' I remembered an incident. Last month during the heavy initial rains, I was driving from Bangalore and reached Kannur Padil at around 2.30 AM . I parked my car at a side waiting for the rain to subside. A matador tempo coming at a slow pace from Mangalore paused on the other side. To my horror , the door slid and someone from inside pushed 5 big grown up dogs on the road side. As the tempo passed by me , I clearly could read the name of a prominent Animal Shelter in Mangalore . The vehicle went ahead and near the junction what looked like a fish market, one guy got down and emptied a gunny bag full of cats and kittens. Then the tempo sped away. So ,these stray animals are let out by the 'Animal Care taking company' or 'Animal Shelter' what ever you call it. This is the reality. I wanted to bring this to everyones awareness.

I am yet to see a dog owner in India picking the poop of his dog. Dog owners in our country royally take their dogs for walks and let them poop on the roadside. So many unlucky joggers and people who go for walks step on that and take it into their car, office and homes. Dog owners must pick the poop after their dog otherwise should be penalized heavily. PS Also cattle owners should not be allowed to let their cattle roam around in public places.

If the neighbour has such a big problem with the dog lover, then she should Complain to the Owner of the house. There is no need to get into unwanted fights etc., with the tenant. Speak to the owner since rajani is on rent. Settle the issue amicably. Surely Rajani can send the animals to dog shelters which are legally licensed to take care of strays etc. I don't think she feeds 400 to 500 dogs in that compound. Seems to be some misunderstanding.

While I understand your viewpoint, whose responsibility is it to care for stray dogs? I firmly believe it is the responsibility of the MCC to take care of the city and its surroundings. This article mentions that she feeds hundreds of dogs in a day, which astonishes me. What exactly are the MCC officials doing? Regarding this woman who feeds stray dogs, it is not a crime to provide them with food. However, it is definitely a crime when someone attacks her, causing her to bleed. The best solution would be for all the people in the locality to collectively file a written complaint against the MCC.
