Mangaluru: Master plan being readied under DC’s initiative to solve flooding of areas

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (SS)

Mangaluru, Jul 5: Deputy commissioner (DC) Mulai Mugilan summoned the officials and held a meeting to find reasons for flooding at Pumpwell junction following the heavy downpour that the city received on July 3.

Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Anand C L said the flooded region was in a lower plane adding that work on the national highway was also in progress. He said due to the heavy rainfall, Pumpwell has been flooded.

He said a master plan is being prepared to bring about a permanent solution under the initiative of the deputy commissioner. He said all possible technical solutions are being examined after which a master plan will be prepared to address the issue.

Life is limping back to normalcy after the water level receded on Tuesday at Pumpwell and Kottara junctions after Monday's heavy downpour.

Vehicular movement and life is returning to normal.

A few shops and garages in Kottara junction were flooded as they were in a low lying area and water was pumped out from these areas. Water flow on the Rajakaluve has also come down. In Pumpwell, vehicular movement is returning to normal.

We are growing old, grown old by reading the thoughts of " Master Plans" . What would the new DC know about the topography of our city. He is just here few days ago. Most of the times I wonder from which Institutions did these Engineers get their Degrees. Most of the time, we common people can find out faults in planning done by " so called engineers " !! Every monsoon, we have temporary, artificial floods in our city . why - why - why is the multi million Dollar question? Where are our drainage systems? our drainage is filled with filth and waste, leaving no space for water to flow. Our roads are dug and re-dug and dug again for concreting, then dug for laying some pipes and cables. Once re-dug, the roads are left half done, thus leading to blocking of roads & road sides. Builders mafia is so strong that building material is stacked up on half of the roads and on road sides. Mud dug from such sites is flowing with rain water and thus blocking the free flow of water. When even an un-educated person knows that, when we have rains, it pours & brings the city to a halt. My question and concern is : a) why can't the authorities clean and clear the drainage system before monsoon sets in? b) why can't the authorities ensure road sides and low lying ares as cleared and a proper pathway for water flowing is put in place? c) why can't our authorities penalize builders and alike who are major reasons for blocking drainage systems ? d) why can't our authorities take a proper survey of low lying areas of the city where these kind of flooding is inevitable? e) pump well circle / flyover has been in news for all wrong reasons for long time. When we had some pre-monsoon showers that place got flooded. Why were the concerned authorities sleeping over it? f) I am not blaming the DC, they are transferred for the drop of a hat, but why our MCC officials are quiet and insensitive towards these perennial issues of our city? use the taxes we pay for the development of our city,

Ask a primary school kids and they will tell the engineers who designed the flyover are idiots as road is lower and the sewage/drainage higher. Inter-national award goes to Nalin Kateel for envisioning swimming pools under every bridge, including Padil underpass.

By the time the plan is ready to be implemented the DC and Commissioner will be transferred and new persons will wait for the next year for the Pumpwell area to be flooded and pumped. This is going on for many years and it will still go on. The MP or MPA should look into this matter since they are there to look into the welfare of the people of their constituency. Very sad that our elected representatives of Mangalore intrested in changing name of roads and circles.
