Kalmadi to be Examined by AIIMS Neuro Expert

New Delhi, Jul 26 (IANS): Suresh Kalmadi, jailed former chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CWG OC), will be taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to examine whether he suffers from dementia, an official said.

He will be taken to the AIIMS either on Wednesday or the day after.

Kalmadi, 66, who has been lodged in the Tihar Jail for the last two months over his alleged involvement in irregularities in some contracts for the Commonwealth Games last year, was taken to the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital July 19 and an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan done on him.

Kalmadi had filed an application before the court that he should be medically examined as he was not feeling well.

"We are providing Kalmadi every possible medical aid from the jail premises and outside. None of the symptoms reported in the MRI are exclusive to dementia, but let the officials get it confirmed by a neuro specialist," a senior Tihar Jail official said, requesting he not be named.

"Kalmadi was sent to the LNJP Hospital where an MRI scan was done, but we are taking him to AIIMS tomorrow or the day after to consult a neurosurgeon. We are in the process of getting appointments from an AIIMS neuro specialist," Sunil Gupta, Tihar spokesperson, told IANS.

He said that Kalmadi will be taken to the AIIMS with proper escort and no family member would accompany him.
