Loan app harassment: Engineering student commits suicide in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jul 12 (IANS): Even after assurance from the Congress government in Karnataka of action against loan apps for harassment, an engineering student committed suicide allegedly for not being able to take the pressure mounted by the staff of a loan app in Bengaluru.

The deceased has been identified as Tejas, a student of mechanical engineering at Nitte Meenakshi College. A topper in his class, Tejas was doing his sixth semester.

A resident of HMT Layout near Jalahalli, Tejas had taken a loan of Rs 40,000 for his friend Mahesh a year ago from a loan app. As he was unable to repay the loan, the loan app had allegedly exerted pressure on him and harassed him demanding repayment.

The police said that Tejas couldn't take the pressure due to which he took the extreme step on Tuesday evening, as mentioned in his suicide note.

“Father and mother please pardon me. There is no way out for me. I was not able to repay the loan and so I decided to end my life. Thanks, good bye,” the note read.

Incidentally, the Karnataka government had stated on Tuesday that action will be initiated against 42 loan apps which were indulging in harassing people.

Loan shark apps are a gift of Digital India; but they have a very old history; famous were the Pathans who used to predominantly lend loans to mill workers; then was a community called Makadwalas who were predominantly in this business; then goldsmiths of some particular communities, and there are local goons who too lend money; also our legalised banks are not less than loan sharks when someone defaults on credit card payments; they employ bouncer goons to collect the money; all in all, it's a big parallel monetary economy!!

Very unfortunate & sad. A young, potential talent for our future is plucked off at such an young age. I always wonder why these mobile apps with dangerous games, these loan apps, which are risky for our youngsters are not banned ? Does it take to few lives to be lost, before an action is taken? Why do these kids use apps for loans rather than using banks which are much better options? I feel sorry for the parents now. Dear Parents please take care of yourselves and stay strong. May God Bless them with strength and courage to face this irreplaceable loss. It is time that Govt takes stringent actions against these guys operating these apps which harasses youngsters , fleeces people and thus loosing young lives in our society.

Very sad to hear. Poor guy couldn't able to face their pressure i guess. Please note Loan app is very risky nowadays because while initiating the loan on initial stage, app collects all the details of buyers contacts list, mobile storage list everything this leads big scam for the buyers to repay it. This will harass each n everyone in the buyers contact list, which leads buyers to take extreme steps. Please dont buy any loans from loan aap.

RIP! Very unfortunate to have fallen into the loan shark's trap even though he was well educated, and already there is so much publicity of these rabid loan apps! That too he took this loan for his friend; why he didn't try to repay it when this boy was being harassed ?

Very sad .Why take loans from Loan App?Is there no possibility to take from Bank? These loan Apps are drinking blood .They simply give on higher interest .However instead of writing note to parents could have spoken to them .Am I right that he has taken loan for his friend? He was in seventh semester and howmany were left to complete ánd suicide.?Heartfelt sympathy to the family .They wont get back their dear son even after paying back loan. Now should the loan pay back that he suicided?by parents?May his soul rest in peace.

Really sad. This is the middle class. This is our future, that is in misery and pain. Wish that he seen the news about karnataka govt taking actions on such loan sharks, he would saved himself and his family from a agonising pain, that they have to live with.
