Quit Now or Face Expulsion, BJP Tells Yeddyurappa

Bangalore, July 29 (IANS) On a day of high drama and swift developments, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) high command Friday told scam-hit Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to resign forthwith or face expulsion from the party.

"BJP observers Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh served an ultimatum to Yeddyurappa to resign unconditionally or face expulsion from the party," a party source told IANS late Friday.

Jaitley and Singh, deputed by the BJP high command as observers to elect a new legislature party leader, met a defiant Yeddyurappa and tried to persuade him to abide by the party's parliamentary board decision Thursday that he should resign following his indictment by the state Lokayukta (ombudsman) in the multi-crore mining scam in the state.

Though the 68-year-old Yeddyurappa agreed to resign July 31, his insistence to have a say in the choice of the new leader, in the formation of the new ministry and his own appointment as the party's state unit president did not find favour with the high command.

"The observers conveyed a stern message from party president Nitin Gadkari to Yeddyurappa through his close aides - Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje and Irrigation Minister Basavaraj Bommai - that he should first submit his resignation to the governor (H.R. Bhardwaj) and then he can place his demands at the party's legislature meeting," the source said.

Jaitley and Singh also told Yeddyurappa and his vocal supporters that their brief was only to preside over the legislature party meeting as observers and facilitate election of a new leader after the chief minister resigns.

"If Yeddyurappa claims that he has majority support of legislators, MPs and others, then he can easily prevail upon them to elect the new leader of his choice, have whatever say in the formation of the new cabinet and convince them to let him head the party's state unit. These are all internal affairs of the party at the state level and have nothing to do with the decision of the high command for his resignation as chief minister," the source quoted the observers telling Shohba and Bommai.

Party's state president K.S Eshwarappa also reiterated that Yeddyurappa was bound to resign as decided by the high command in line with the party's policy of directing those indicted by a court of law or Lokayukta to step down.

"Though Yeddyurappa contributed immensely to the growth of the BJP in the state, led the party to power and became the party's first chief minister in south India, he is no exception to the policy decision of the parliamentary board, which is supreme. He has no option but abide by the high command's directive," Eshwarappa told reporters late Friday.

With a sulking Yeddyurappa refusing to budge from his three pre-conditions, the party was forced to cancel the legislature party meeting that was rescheduled twice during the day.

Yeddyurappa claimed the support of 75 legislators, 15 MPs and 21 legislative council members in having a say in the formation of the party's next government.

In a statement late Thursday, the chief minister said he would tender his resignation July 31 after the end of Ashada masa (month), which began July 2 and ends July 30, as it is considered inauspicious time to take important decisions as per the Hindu calendar.

"I am a disciplined worker of the BJP. I have decided to tender my resignation to the post of chief minister as per the direction of the party. The month of Ashada (according to Hindu calendar) will be over on 30th July 2011 on the New Moon day or Amavasya. I will be tendering my resignation as Chief Minister on the forenoon of 31st July 2011," Yeddyurappa said in the statement.

The lingering crisis came in handy for the Congress to attack the BJP. In New Delhi, its spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi mocked at the party, saying Yeddyurappa appeared to be dictating terms to quit.

The effort to find a successor to Yeddyurappa began late Thursday, a few hours after the BJP parliamentary board met in New Delhi and "unanimously" decided to ask the chief minister to resign.

The marching orders came a day after state Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde recommended Yeddyurappa's prosecution for graft in the huge illegal mining scam.

BJP general secretary and in-charge of Karnataka party affairs Dharmendra Pradhan has been holding meetings with groups of legislators and ministers from Thursday evening. Late Thursday, former BJP president and Rajya Sabha member from the state M.Venkaiah Naidu joined him in the exercise.

It’s not just the money transfer from one hand to another or not money made by corruption or robbed from bank locker, but the environmental damage and the damage to the Nature done by these guys to our beloved Earth in Karnataka within a short period of time is much above the limit. It will take years and years to repair... it’s just not repairable within a given period of time. These greedy fellows have cut the stomach of a Hen laying golden eggs. They have cut out the stomach of our Mother India removed out the intestine. Not even Britishers who have ruled India have not done such damage to Mother India during their period of rule. These types of Politicians if allowed to rule for another few years they will also remove Western Ghats from the face of the Earth.

Everybody is talking about positions, resignations etc.,, and no body is talking of prison terms, immediate arrest etc., He has been implicated in a criminal case. Let the law be the same for everyone. If it was a 'ANYBODY' I am sure the first thing would be to arrest him. Can we all become politicians of the stature of BSY, so we can negotiate for other better means of survival, when implicated??

When i was in school i was told, 'if wealth is lost not much is lost, if health is lost all is lost' With Yeddi it looks like 'if health is lost nothing is lost, if wealth is lost something is lost & if chair is lost everything is lost. Dear readers not favouring BJP, Cong or any party this shows the charecter & attitude of our leaders. They can stoop to any levels. Let the electorate teach these rouges a lesson. Portals like daiji play a vital role in informing the people. These rouges should not be allowed to contest an election at all. It is time to realise by seeing the middle east crisis. 1st Ben Ali from Tunasia, 2nd Mubarak from Egypt, 3rd Saleh from Yemen, Yeddi to follow, Gadaffi & Al-Assad in waiting.
India hosted CWG and the arena was not ready even after the games started. Rampant looting took place. Britain is hosting the Olympic Games and the venue is ready 1 year prior schedule reducing costs by about 15%. Why could they do it when India had immense man power. Attitude of the organisers. They were more intrested in looting. I hope i is clear why Britain being such a small country ruled half the world. PM not to under the Lokpal, Why??? The Premier of Tasmania, a state in Australia David Bartlett 43 years in age resigned as he was not finding time to spend with his wife, son Hudson (3) and daughter Matilda (5) after which Lara Giddings took over. Here this CM has sunk in corruption and still wnats to remain as CM. High time he should be trashed.

    ಗಂಡ ಇದ್ದಾಗ ಬುದ್ದಿ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಬುದ್ದಿ ಬಂದಾಗ ಗಂಡ ಇಲ್ಲ.
There is no moral in BJP party and all these years they bluffed every citizen by saying HINDUISM. They neither solved any problems of the poor nor helped the needy once. When ever opposition came in power these BJP leaders tried to pull one another leg and many times the government was failed. Corruption, criminal activities, and communal rites rate has been increased compare to any other party ruling time. One thing we all must observe there is no discipline in BJP and all of them are power greedy persons.

BJP consciously sought the support of the Lingayat Mutts of Karnataka in its bid to capture power at the state. BSY, its senior most leader, a Lingayat was the natural choice to lead the party before the polls. BJP won the elections and BSY was the natural ion for the Chief Minister candidate.

BSY continuing the Lingayat politics is a logical consequence of the initial direction approved by the party, especially in the context of consolidating his power. BJP high command or Sangh Parivar can not take a principled stance in this issue. Resources of Reddy brothers were deployed not just in assembly elections, but also in subsequent parliamentary elections and byelections to the benefit of the party. Lokayukta report has rightly indicted Reddys and BSY, but it was not an unknown for the BJP highcommand.

BJP central parliamentary board decision to replace BSY, immediately aftermath of the submission of the Lokayukta report, is understandable as a measure to position itself as a principled party in the eyes of the public, especially while playing the role of principled opposition at the parliament. But, the way the decision of change of guard is being implemented is detrimental to the party.

First of all, BSY deserves a decent exit. The fact that he is stepping down shows that he is already on the decline. Smooth transition needs his cooperation and approval in choosing the next CM. Ananth Kumar should stay away from race on his own.
