Udupi: Traditional fishing affected once again due to strong waves in sea

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Jul 21: Fury of monsoon continues in the coastal region of Karnataka. Traditional fishermen are unable to venture into sea as the storm that formed in the Arabian Sea four days ago is still not calmed down.

The weather was conducive for fishing from July 13 to 16. However, from July 17 the weather is not favourable for traditional fishermen. In few days’ time, mechanized boat fishing season will begin. So the traditional fishermen, who were dreaming of earning good revenue are distraught.

Sea erosion has turned severe at Padubidri. Viewing tower and resting towers are on the verge of being washed away into the sea. Few days ago, coconut trees and development work related materials were washed away into the sea at Kadipatna Kairampani near the beach. District in-charge minister Laxmi Hebbalkar had instructed to carry out emergency work. Though there was shortage of fund, a licenced contractor had begun work. Now the viewing tower is standing on only one pillar.

Foundation of ladder to climb the tower is washed away into the sea. Strong waves are lashing on the foundation of resting tower and there is every possibility that the tower may collapse.

Due to the huge crater formed near the beach, developmental works are destroyed. Tourism department spent Rs 1.5 crore on the project.
