M'lore: Advocate Ashwin Kumar Dies After Consuming Wrong Mixture on Aati

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jul 30: In a tragic incident, 26-year-old Ashwin Kumar, an advocate in the city, passed away after drinking a concoction made from the sap of a tree on the occasion of Aati Amavasya on Saturday July 30.

Instead of preparing the mixture from the sap of the traditional paale tree (also called Devil's tree or haale mara), his family prepared it from the sap of a wrong tree by mistake, which proved to be fatal.

On July 30 morning, Ashwin, his brother Brijesh and mother Dakshayini along with their servant Kashaiah were admitted to KMC hospital when they took ill soon after drinking the potion.

The family are residents of Kelinja in Vittal. Dakshayini is a widow and mother of two sons and three daughters. Her husband the late Damodar Poojary was a tahsildar.

Dakshayini was already suffering from other ailments, and the poison first had effect on her. Ashwin and Brijesh immediately rushed her to the hospital but on the way even Ashwin took ill.

Brijesh and Ashwin plucked the bark of the tree from their farm, mistaking it to be the paale tree. The mother too did not notice it, and prepared the brew without raising any question.

Ashwin perished late in the evening on the same day, while his mother is out of danger and the other two are recovering.

Such tragedies are very rare, and
it is very depressing because even
    though the victims were educated
people, they had to suffer it.

Memory can tell us only what we were,
In company with those we loved
It cannot help us find out what each of us,
    Alone, must now become.
Yet, no person is really alone
Those who live no more still echo
    Within our thoughts and words,
And what they did has become
    Woven into what we are.

Well, we have lost such a promising person. Now who can criticize about some of the blind beliefs. Religion without science is blind. It breeds communal violence and terrorism too!

The tree should be identified, sample should be tested to rule out any foul play. If a particular tree is poisonus people should be informed.Eradicating such trees will save precious lives.People may misuse it.
My Condolances to the family.RIP Aswin.

Is it due to wrong mixture of Aati or negligence/ late attending the case by the doctors.

Such bright boy has lost his life. Really I have no words to express my grief, when i was looking at the bright young boys photo here. Man made superstitious leads to unwarranted situations.

We pray to Almighty to give courage to the family members to bear this great loss. May Ashwin's soul rest in peace.

May the soul of young lawyer rest in peace and this is his destiny and his life was suppose to end in this way. But I was there yesterday in Mangalore and we too had this medicine prepared by one of our Hindu family freind. The people who knows the tree and its location should do this, with care, so that instead of making something good, it will become drastically wrong. It was told that earlier years too this type of cases happened.

Mr. Ashly, Alangar, Dubai...here is a small info on this Mixture on Aati..

For the pious Hindus the Aati Amavasya in the first week of August usually falls with dark days is the day of cleansing oneself with the abundant waters that the heavens had showered upon the earth. It is an event welcoming the bounty of the nature that is to follow in the spring time come after the monsoons.

From the DON/Very Early morning..People taking home a bark of the tree known as Palae in Tulu and Haale in Kannada and in Konkani Satni Rooku. Its scientific name being Alstonia Scholaris (Lin. Apocynaceae) It is also known as the Spirit’s tree. They take home a bark of this tree and prepare a decoction of the bark and the family members drink that to get rid of the toxins that had accumulated in their bodies during the three months of monsoons. While the bath in the Pushkaranis of temples and the sea cleanses them externally the juice of Palae tree cleanses them internally. It is also known for its medicinal values that gets rid of so many germs that can cause diseases.

There was no mistake of the tree nor the ritual, It was bling following and not adequate knowledge which resulted in the mishap. A Wisdom of thousand years is better than some bookish knowledge which has been trialled for few deecades only.
