Bantwal, July 24: Thieves broke open a grocery shop, dress and fancy shop at Benjanapadavu during the intervening night of July 22 and July 23 and decamped with goods and cash from there.
Namitha, wife of Suresh, has been running the grocery, dress and fancy shops at Albert Fernandes building for the last seven years. She had closed the shop at 8 pm on July 22 and gone home. A person known to her telephoned her at 6 am on July 23 informing that the shutter of her had been broken. She came to know of the theft when she visited the spot with her daughter.
The shutter of Rajarajeshwari grocery shop was broken by thieves with a metal tool. The burglars took away biscuit packets, cigarette packet and Rs 1,500 in cash from the drawer. The thieves also broke open the lock of Rajarajeshwari Dress and Fancy store and stole Rs 10,000 worth shirts, jeans pants, Rs 5,000 worth sandals and Rs 3,500 from the cash drawer besides another Rs 10,000 from the dumb box. They also broke open the lock of the stock room and stole a tin containing paint.
It is estimated that the value of stolen items is about Rs 33,500. A case in this connection has been filed with Bantwal rural police station.
