Parliament Should Function Smoothly: PM

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IANS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday said his government was ready to face any issue brought up by the opposition but the monsoon session of parliament should function smoothly.

"It is our sincere desire that this session should move smoothly, that parliament should debate and discuss all issues of national importance and the government is quite prepared on any subject that opposition would like to be taken up," Manmohan Singh told reporters.

"We would welcome a structured debate on that," he added. He, however, said that those matters which are in court, are best left at that.

His remarks came as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the AIADMK trained guns on him and Home Minister P. Chidambaram after former communications minister A. Raja alleged that they had the knowledge of his actions on the 2G spectrum allocation.

"I hope that matters which are in courts, those are best left for the courts to decide. We are hoping that this session will be a productive session," Singh said.

"My appeal to the opposition is to unite on this occasion, to tackle all issues collectively that our nation faces," he added.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said Monday: "We are going to corner the government on several issues- there is corruption, price rise, Telangana, Mumbai attack".
