Mangaluru, Jul 31: Prof K Byrappa, well known academician and former vice chancellor of Mangaluru University passed away on Monday due to cardiac arrest at Bengaluru International Airport.
Byrappa got his master’s degree with distinction from Mysore University. He went on to complete his PhD and post doctorate fellow ship from Moscow state university in Russia, which was considered as one of the top ten universities in the world during that period.
Byrappa took over charge as VC of Mangalore University in 2014. Earlier he served in various capacities in university of Mysore for 31 long years. Byrappa had expertise in chemistry of materials, crystallography, experimental mineralogy, crystal chemistry, nanotechnology, solid state science, materials science and environmental science.
Byrappa is known as authority in hydrothermal technology. He published 370 research articles in international journals and also citations numbering 6900.
Byrappa wrote widely read handbook of hydrothermal technology which was published by Elsevier Publishers of the United Kingdom. He had also edited 10 books and 32 book chapters and reviews.
Prof Byrappa is survived by wife, who is also a retired professor and two sons.
