Mangalore: Experts Speak on 'Palliative Care' at FMMCH Workshop

Mangalore, Aug 3: A day-long workshop on Palliative Care organized by the department of oncology and nursing service was inaugurated in the conference hall of Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) here on Wednesday August 3.

Dr N S Channappa Gowda, deputy commissioner, the chief guest inaugurated the workshop. Speaking on the occasion he said that medical field in olden days was known to be a field of service but off late commercialization has hit the medical field too. The real meaning of medical treatment lies in ascertaining poorest people in the society and treating them under the milieu of humanity.

He said the workshop on Palliative Care in fact provides guidelines on the best possible quality of life for people facing the pain, symptoms and stresses of active life threatening illnesses. He lauded the institution for serving the patients in the best possible way providing quality of life for both the patient and their family by a Team approach.

Dr Laveena Noronha, director of Ave Maria Palliative Care Unit, Vamanjoor was the guest of honor and also resource person on the occasion. Fr Richard Coelho, administrator, FMMCH presided. Dr J P Alva, dean, FMMC welcomed. Dr Naven Rudolf Rodrigues, in charge of palliative care unit and organizing chair person delivered vote of thanks. Fr Denis D’Sa, administrator, FMMC & director in-charge, Dr B S Rai, CMS, FMCI and Sr Aileen Mathias, nursing superintendent, FMMCH and convener were present.

Workshop will be held in 3 sessions. Dr Laveena Noronha, director, Ave Maria Hospice, Vamanjoor, Alice Stella Vergenia, ex-lieutenant Army, palliative nurse specialist, Mohammed Saif, state project manager, palliative care, national rural health mission, Kerala, Sr Doreen, administrator, Cynthia Memorial Goretti Hospice, Santhekatte, Kallianpur, Dr Smitha Bhat, associate professor medicine, FMMCH, Dr Shivprasad, vice principal, FMHC, Dr Carol Mathias, clinical psychologist, FMMCH are the speakers for the day.
