It's Official: Sadananda Gowda is 26th Chief Minister of Karnataka

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Aug 3: After week-long political instability and much drama in Karnataka,  the Bharatiya Janata Party has finally managed to appoint Sadananda Gowda as the new leader to rule the state for the remaining two years of its term.

The CM's post was vacated when B S Yeddyurappa resigned from his post on Sunday, July 31, following the submission of the explosive report on mining by Lokayukta and the subsequent orders from the BJP high command.

As there was no consensus, BJP high command had to opt for secret ballot to choose the new CM. Earlier, the two camps, each supporting Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar, reportedly exchanged a war of words and even went on to attack each other physically. But the high command managed to calm down the situation. Yeddyurappa supporters were not in favour of the secret ballot, as they wanted Sadananda Gowda to be appointed as the unanimous leader.

117 MLAs participated in the secret voting. Nominated MLA Anglo Indian Derrick and Independent MLA Varthur Prakash were not allowed to participate in the voting.

Sadananda Gowda bagged 62 votes, Jagadesh Shettar had to satisfy with 55 votes.

Sadananda Gowda supported by the Yeddyurappa camp and Jagadish Shettar backed by the Ananth Kumar / Eshwarappa camp were the probable candidates for the post.

55-year-old Sadananada Gowda hails from Sullia of Dakshina Kannada district, and is the member of parliament from Udupi-Chikmaglur constiuency. He has vast experience of managing the state BJP unit for five years. Known to be a close aide of B S Yeddyurappa, Sadananda Gowda has the capacity of taking the party and state forward with his friendly disposition.

Clean Image

For D V,  as he is known popularly, this will be another feather in the cap because he was the President of the party  in Karnataka when the BJP formed its first government South of Vindyas in 2007, when the Yeddyurappa led government came to power in Karnataka.  And now with the ouster of Yeddyurappa, there is a vacancy for Sadananda Gowda to occupy the highest post of Chief Minister of the state.  Puttur and the neighbouring Sullia from where Sadananda Gowda hails are agog with the buzzword that Sullia’s son of the soil DV is all set to don the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Though Puttur is also clamoring for   its daughter Shobha Karandlaje, whose name was doing the rounds initially, she is no match to DV who has risen in politics from grass root level and has proved he is a bellwether having a clean image who has proved his capability of turning the fortunes of the party, time and again.  His clean image and experience as MLA, two-time MP and as the state President of the party, gives him an edge vis-à-vis the other contenders.  The possibility of DV becoming the Chief Minister has enheartened the people of Dakshina Kannada District.

DV who hails from Devaragunda family of Mandekolu village in Sullia Taluk was born on March 18, 1953 to Venkappa Gowda and Kamala couple.  He had his early education in Panjikal in Sullia and Puttur.  He graduated in Science from St Philomena College Puttur and completed his law degree from Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi.  It was his father who moulded his personality. But D V lost his father when he was in college and his uncle Devaragunda Chinnappa was primarily responsible for giving a proper orientation to his career.

In one of the recent interviews to the public service broadcaster DV had acknowledged that it was Fr Henry Castelino of St Philomena College who gave a new facet to his life.

Proved his Mettle

From his childhood Sadananda Gowda proved his leadership qualities by donning the role of school pupil leader in high school, as leader in the college and as the general secretary at the law college.  One can say the leadership quality nurtured by him during his early years has played a crucial role in shaping him for the political roles he has essayed.  After his law degree DV worked as a public prosecutor in Sullia for 1½ years.  It was Vinayachandra, a BJP leader who encouraged him to come back to Sullia and also help build the party.  He resigned his job in Sirsi and came back to Sullia and along with his practice he helped build the party in Sullia and Puttur.  D V was appointed as the President of party’s Sullia assembly segment.  He went on to hold many important positions in the party subsequently.

During his formative years in BJP Sadananda Gowda has served as the President of Namdekolu Co-operative Society in Sullia for 5 years.   He also served as the Vice President of South Canara District Co-operative Credit Bank, Mangalore and as the Director of CAMPCO.  It was in 1989 that Sadananda Gowda entered the electoral fray by contesting the assembly elections which he lost by a narrow  margin of 1060 votes.  That defeat gave him the impulsion required fighting the elections once again and his perseverance and hard work paid off.  In the 1994 assembly elections DV won the assembly elections by a narrow margin of 404 votes.  From then onwards he never gave up the winning formula. DV has also served as the Dy leader of the opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.  From assembly DV graduated to Lok Sabha and he was been elected as the MP twice, 2004 and 2009.  During this period he also served as the state President of the BJP in Karnataka.

D V has faced many tragedies in life. He had lost his young son a two decades back and again his elder son had met with a serious accident in September 2008.  DV also had a serious health problem and had to undergo a major surgery just a few years ago.  But he has never allowed his personal tragedies to come in the way of his public responsibilities.

Within 15 days of the death of his son he had come to the office saying his pain should not become the pain of the society.  As president of the party in the state he steered the BJP to power in the state and continued to be its president till K S Eshwarappa took over as President in 2010.  He is the serving MP of Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency.

For Sadananda Gowda destiny has opened its doors widely.  How he fits in and presides over the political conundrum will have to be keenly watched once he assumes office.   The fact that DV has no experience as minister is the only flaw in an otherwise impeccant track record.  For the costal people of Udupi and Mangalore, which has supported the BJP with all its might, it would be a matter of pride and satisfaction to see their own man at the helm.  It has enkindled their consciousness and also their desire to see DV occupy the coveted post.

Sadananda Gowda Elected Yeddyurappa's Successor After Secret Ballot

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Aug 3: After a noisy BJP legislative members' meet at Capitol Hotel, Bangalore, the BJP high command leaders managed to calm down the pro and anti- Yeddyurappa camps to an extent, and decided to go for a secret ballot for the election of the successor to B S Yeddyurappa as chief minister of Karnataka.

The two camps as well as the BJP high command leaders engaged in verbal attacks at each other, and there were reports that the members even resorted to blows.

In the secret voting, Sadananda Gowda has reportedly received 68 votes and Jagadish Shettar has received 49 votes.

Nominated MLA Anglo Indian Derrick and Independent MLA Varthur Prakash were not allowed to participate in the voting.

Though it has not been officially announced yet by the high command members, according to the ballot Sadananda should be next CM of Karnataka.

It will be interesting to wait and watch whether the MLAs who have expressed their differences openly will accept the new leader or not.

Why are we becoming a divided nation ? It pains me to read the comments of some here that they are happy because the new CM is from coastal Karnataka. Should our priority not be whether he is a person of honesty and integrity rather than which place he comes from ? I also wonder what is happening with the BJP leadership. The BJP which keeps accusing the Congress of practising pseudo-secularism now have lost the right to accuse.

Is it not shameful & narrow minded thinking to wonder whether a Lingayat or a Vokkaliga will be a better choice for CM ? Is the CM only going to represent Lingayats or only Vokkaligas ? What about the rest of the people of Karnataka ? Will no one care about them ? Shameful to know how divided Indians have become. Instead of focussing on the character of the individual we seem to give more emphasis on the person's community, religion and native place. When will we Indians become a mature Society ?

Now DV Sadananda Gowda shall be the Chief Minister of Karnataka for the rest of the period until 2013 provided he is given the same free hand in a democratic way.
The Congress party too once experienced such election within the party. But it happens only when the dynastic forces are weakened. The days of Sharad Powar Vs. Arjun Singh were short lived. The Italian born Sonia has crippled internal democracy in Congress party. But BJP conducts elections to evolve leadership in a natural way.
Yeddyurappa was the man who led BJP to install first ever BJP Government in South India. Such credit cannot be snatched from him just because he is alleged to have links in mining business. It is not illegal to run a business or buy a land. But the forces which wished to destabilize the nationalist forces are always at work which have hatched a conspiracy to make a slur campaign against BJP . They are afraid of Anti Corruption movement in India and they wished to say that “You too are corrupt”. They try in this direction.
Those who are unable to digest the corruption free Governance of Mahatma Narendra modi have found a chance in Karnataka to conduct a vicious campaign against BJP. The mining is a continuous process which happened in Congress and Janata Dal periods. But only Yeddyurappa has been asked to sacrifice his hard earned historical victory. The unpatriotic forces fear that BIP if established in Karnataka shall penetrate down to Kerala and Tamil nadu. Therefore they joined hands with media and have created a rift within the BJP Legislature party members.
However the BJP has acted wisely. Initially there was a trial for consensus . But when it was not possible there could be no other way except to conduct a secret ballot. If it had been Congress Yeddy would have been thrown out. The treatment to YSR family in Andhra is the best example.
The media as usual have spitted venom by saying that Sadananda is a rubber stamp of Yeddy. Such people have no understanding about the democratic ways of resolving a party dispute. It is the internal affair of the party , It has been resolved in a best method. But media have no mind to appreciate this. The pseudo secular forces in the media have downgraded the mandate offered by the people in Karnataka. Their opposition only shows that they do not wish a BJP Government in Karnataka. They are anti Hindu and they do not wish a developed and prosperous Karnataka with political stability.

In 2004, Congress rising to power is only by virtue of her leadership . Her foes may call her any name but she had delivered the results to the party which one should appreciate.

Finally Yeddi succeeded in making his puppet as CM. Party is come power due to lingayat and Yeddi is now lingayat enemy. A good leader Mr. Shetter is cornered for personal agenda of Yeddi forgetting the lingayat generosity for BJP. Our Karnataka will see its worst in the days to come till all lingayat uproot the BJP.

This is the good lesson for all mutts from Yeddi. All swamys were blindly supporting the Yeddi and its gang, now what happend he has not made his community person as CM. First direction from yeddi will be to Mr. Gowda to reject Lokayuka report. yes boss.. Next resign before 6 month. yes boss..Yeddi will be back again. This is the game plan.
