Sports ministry to introduce sports bill in this session

New Delhi, Aug 3 (IANS) The sports ministry Wednesday said it would introduce the National Sports Development Bill in the current session of parliament in a bid to bring transparency in sports administration in the country.

"With a view to enforcing the principles of good governance and transparency in the administration of sports at the national level, the ministry has proposed to introduce a draft of the National Sports Development Bill in the current session of parliament," sports minister Ajay Maken said in the Lok Sabha.

Maken said several responses have been received on the draft bill, which was placed in the public domain in February.

"The IOA (Indian Olympic Association) and some national sports federations have opposed it inter-alia indicating that the central government is not competent to enact law on sports which is a state subject and the autonomy of sports bodies enshrined in International Olympic Committee (IOC) charter gets violated by age and tenure restrictions imposed by the government," he said.
