Two die in IAF plane crash


New Delhi/Lucknow, Aug 4 (IANS) A Jaguar combat plane of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in Uttar Pradesh Thursday, killing the pilot and a civilian on the ground, officials said.

The single-seater aircraft crashed into the fields of Firozpur Dhilai village in Madhuban town of Mau district, some 250 km from Lucknow.

The accident happened at around 12:15 p.m., an officer from the Central Air Command told IANS.

The pilot was identified as Flight Lieutenant S. Pandey while the victim on the ground, a girl, was identified as Rooma.

"The aircraft was on a training exercise and crashed into the fields," Deputy Inspector General Azamgarh range L. Ravikumar told IANS on telephone.

The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry into the crash.

A MiG-21 jet crashed Tuesday claiming the life of a young pilot in Rajasthan.
