Udupi, Aug 9: The team of municipal council commissioner, senior health officer, junior health officer, sanitary supervisor and civic workers raided the shops selling single-use plastic in the market on Wednesday, August 9.
They confiscated 62 kilos of single-use plastic and imposed a fine of Rs 700 on them. The team also directed all the traders to use reusable items instead of the banned plastic items and warned them that their trade licence will be cancelled otherwise.
The officials had confiscated 324 kilos of banned plastic and levied a fine of Rs 58,200 on traders during July 2023. Businesses that used reusable plastic were declared as green organisations. The municipal commissioner has asked traders to give up using single-use plastic and get them named as green organisations.
“Every citizen should use steel tumblers and steel plates while consuming tea, coffee and food on roadside food outlets and during special occasions to reduce trash as per the directions of the state government. People should join hands with the municipal council to protect the environment and for public health,” said municipal commissioner in a press release.
