Mangaluru, Aug 10: The woman police station here has apprehended an individual in connection with the sexual assault of a young girl.
The arrested individual has been identified as Yamanura (22), a street play artiste hailing from Raichur. He is also accused of being a con artiste misusing a police uniform with him meant for plays, to cheat gullible people.
According to the complaint lodged at the Woman Police Station, the accused, posing as Vamanjoor station PSI, established contact with the victim through social media. He lured her by promising assistance in securing a job for her family and subsequently obtained all her relevant documents.
In May 2023, the two met at a temple, following which they went to a beach where a photograph was taken. The accused then employed threats, asserting his intention to circulate the photograph on social media.
Subsequently, the accused summoned the victim to Bengaluru and Kinnigoli, where he subjected her to sexual assault. Furthermore, he sent explicit photographs to her family and friends, ensuring their widespread circulation on social media platforms.
Demanding a sum of Rs 1,50,000 for the deletion of these compromising images, the accused continued his manipulation of the victim.
A case has been registered at the Woman Police Station under sections 354(D), 376, 384, 506, 170, and 67(A) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the Information Technology Act.
The apprehended individual has been presented before the court and remanded to judicial custody for a period of 15 days.
Police Commissioner Kuldeep Jain highlighted the urgency for parents to exercise vigilance over their children's online interactions. He emphasized the emerging trend of young girls falling prey to sexual assault after being befriended on social media platforms and coerced through false promises of marriage.
